    As corrupt African despots go, he's not that far out of the ordinary in terms of corruption, brutality, economic mismanagement, etc. If he hadn't moved against the white settler community, most of us probably never even would have heard of him.

    By way of comparison, Yoweri Museveni in Uganda is apparently a great lad altogether ... not much to choose between his record and Mugabe's in general.

    Not justifying him, just saying.

    Nice bit of whataboutery there.

    Mugabe and his cronies terrorizing of the white farmers destroyed his country's economy and caused a famine, thats a bit more than what the usual tin-pot dictator does.

    The sooner mugabe is gone, the better.

    Although I doubt very much whether it was his move against the white settler that destroyed the economy, generally these guys manage to destroy the country by a combination of corruption, tribalism, cronyism and generally not giving a toss about anyone outside their own circle. I've been to Zimbabwe, and it didn't appear to be much in much worse shape than other countries in the region.

    Causing, extending or exploiting famine is standard practice for African strong-men in dealing with tribes or ethnic groupings deemed to be hostile. Museveni is a textbook example, which is why I mention him - pulled the same trick on the Acholis in the north of the country, the absolute pr!ck.

    Again, that should in no way be taken as justifying Mugabe - I just would like to be see all African leaders being held to the same standards for their crimes against their own people as Mugabe was for expelling the white settler community.

    He won't be missed. But if anyone wants some insight into the mentality of Mugabe's supporters, they could do a lot worse than reading Brian Chikwava's excellent novel Harare North.
