After a good few years of motoring, I've never bothered my arse with breakdown insurance, but I'm going to be heading down the bangernomics route again soon, and changing them often, I don't want to carry around half my garage in my boot just in case, and I don't want to end up blocking some busy road juction / slip lane, while i fck about under the bonnet in the pissing irish weather and then ring round mates / go for a walk for parts etc., or haggle with a local garage on the phone re pick up and repair. (Been there done that over the years, bought the t-shirt etc.) :)

So whats your experience with breakdown insurance ?

What are the best value deals out there ?

Is there good coverage in rural areas as well as the cites etc. ?

Whats your stories and experiences ?

The stuff most insurers offer is adequate imo. Can't see the point in going bangernomics and paying for the likes of the AA stuff unless you're going driving abroad tbh.

Agree with rover james. i needed breakdown assistance twice and both times my insurance company's BA came out within an hour and had me back on the road quickly.

You mustn't drive too far from home in the Rover then (joking :))

Except in the event of a smash, my currrent insurance does't offer any breakdown/recovery service (cheap policy)

You can get pretty comprehensive breakdown cover for about €60 a year for other providers, the equivalent AA one is about twice that price.

I'm looking for peoples experiences of this type of cover / service they got etc.

Ive had a few through my insurance company and they do what they say; attempt basic repairs on the spot (usually amounts to giving it a jump if the battery is flat) and tow you if they cant get it going. Ive used them a few times and they usually just put you in touch wiht the local tow service who will tow you to their yard or to a garage of your choice if its near. Im not sure what else you might get from an independant policy but in terms of breakdown assistance they do what it says on the tin!
