chateauneuf du pape is 20 euro in superquinn at the moment it was 30 ,flys off the shelves

Tesco, lidl, aldi and dunnes all have a different chateauneuf but all are at 12.99. Would be interested to see what differences there are between them. Have tried the lidl and aldi which were alright but not great (a bit too grapejuicy if you know what I mean). However, I'm not all that mad about rhone wines generally so maybe that's it.

Or maybe it's because you're drinking 13 euro chateauneuf du papes.

    The Black Shiraz - €10.99
Extremely good Australian Shiraz and very affordable.

I'm not sure what your point is. 13 is not cheap for a bottle of wine, and if you have to spend more than that to get a decent chateauneuf then in my view the whole appellation is overpriced.

If you're trying to suggest that the only rhone wines I've tried are these 13e chateauneufs, that is not the case, and I think that is pretty clear from my post.

You're going to have to spend at least €30 for a good Chateauneuf and even then you'd want to be very sure of it's provenance. When you're paying €13 it's almost certainly from high yield (low quality) vineyards and in order to deliver at that price somebody is being squeezed. Usually the distributor but more often these days the consumer. By and large you'll get what you pay for.

M&S have recently (to me at least) introduced a very nice Primitivo (Villa Magna Primitivo di Manduria 2008) @ around €14

I don't agree with that at all. Pretty much every other wine producing region of note manages to knock out a perfectly decent entry level wine for under ten euro. If there isn't one, it suggests that the appellation is too tightly controlled to force the price up.

Any region that you need to spend 30 quid on to get even a drinkable wine seems overpriced to me. With chateauneuf, it seems more likely that you are paying for the name rather than the wine in the bottle.

there are plenty of Cotes du Rhones around €10. They're not as good as the higher end wine from the region but they are there.

I don't think it's "more likely", not everyone is so easy led, but it certainly happens. I would always suggest to a customer (if it's not a present they're buying) that they should try a Vacqueyras or Gigondas rather than a Chateauneaf. half the price and 90% the quality - and that's compared to a good Chateauneuf.

Got a lovely bottle from O'Briens yesterday of Gerard Bertrand Pic St Loup 2010 at €9.99. Had it today with a Lamb Roast and it was lovely and fruity. I picked up a bottle of Monte Real Rioja Reserva as well at €12.99, I have had that before (paid more for it) its a heavier red, very oaky which I love in a Red Wine. Saving that for a good cheese plate later on this month :)

The Rioja is a Parker 91 pointer, so a bit of a steal at €8. Gonna pick up a bottle or two today. Tesco are doing the apparently quite well regarded Tim Adams 'The Fergus' for €10 at the moment (down from €15).

Got two bottles of this yesterday, along with a bottle of Tim Adams Riesling. (They also have TA Shiraz down to €10 but was out of stock.) Find out last night that Tesco had a 'buy 6 bottles and get 25% off' offer started yesterday - but the signage wasn't up yet in my local store! Would have bought a few more....

Nice alright! Also had a bottle of Shiraz - now that was bloody delicious! Few more bought for the "cellar". Also got a bottle of Adams Aberfeldy Shiraz - down from €40 to €15 on the 25% deal (which finishes today).
