assuming you have a cert of competence and a receipt showing you have applied for the full licence, has anyone ever heard of someone being pulled for this?

A certificate of competency is not a full license. You are not considered fully licensed until you have your pink license in hand. You could be pulled over and brought to court for not being accompanied, and also not displaying L plates.

Now that being said, I would think the chances of this happening would be almost zero. But that's the law as it stands.

yes, thats exactly what i meant. I would have thought too that the Gardai would have no interest in this, but i was just wondering if anyone had ever heard of someone being done for it.

If the guard is by the book then possibly, but TBH I've never heard of it and some mates who are guards have never come across it.

Get into the tax office ASAP and apply for the license AFAIK you can drive freely on the receipt they give you - it only take 2-3 days for the license to arrive anyway.

I think I read of a case here that it actually went to court, but as far as I can remember the judge threw it out. So there is a bit of a risk but whether they would really bother in most instances, surely not? Don't know if you could pick up some penalty points though?
