Would anyone have any idea what might be going on with my car....:( Its a 01 Renault Megane

Sometimes (once/twice a week) the car wont stay started when i switch it on. The rev counter will go up like normal, then drop straight away (ie cut out) Also sometimes it just cuts out when I am slowing down.

In order to restart I need to rev it up and keep the rev counter at 3/4 and then pull off!!

    Any advice much appreciated.

    Dodgey idle control valve?

My dads Laguna I was doing that , got steadily worse. Very simple DIY fix with a 2nd hand one I got on ebay for €30 ish.

I presume its the 1.4 engine?
If it is, the usually the TDC sensor or the cam shaft sensor that need replacing.

+1 for crank sensor, common on the 1.4 petrol at that age.

My old clio did that for a week after I bought it. Before I could get back to the garage it fixed itself. Worked fine for a year... then I crashed it :(

My best guess is that the battery or alternator suffered from lack of use but came back to full health.

The crank sensor issue usually presents as a non-start in these. Also have a good look around for perished hoses that may be drawing air.

As other posters have said, check all the hoses these can perish / split. it can sometimes be difficult to see the split but sometimes really obvious have a good luck around.

It can also be camshaft sensor. If oil has been changed sometimes people manage to get some on the rear of the sensor points and grud builds up on the rear contacts. This can work itself out but a clean of the electrical connector with contact cleaner would be first port of call. if no joy then replace the sensor.
