Quick question for those in the know, at what mileage should the timing belt be done on a Volvo S40 1.6d engine? Getting different answers all over the place.

in that case, ring a VOLVO dealer and ask.

Every 240,000km or 10 years, whichever comes first.

George Im not 100% sure whats the story with these engines. We say 240000km but we rang Peoguet and they said 136000km, we rang another one and they said 160000km. I wonder does Row know?

@brennarr, they have a belt and a chain.

It's a strange one alright, according to Autodata Peugeot say 240,000km under normal conditions or 200,000km under adverse conditions.

I always go with the Ford interval of 240,000km on them and I haven't seen one break yet thankfully.

Same as ourselves. I wonder are some main stealer's changing the intervals so they can get more revenue? Autodata also said the same for me.

one car thats on my shortlist is actually a volvo S40 1.6D

what do the mechanics think they are like reliability wise?, haven't been to a dealers to take one for a test drive yet

they all appear v well specced, more equipment more things to go wrong?

from what I read on here I see that the volvo S40, mazda 3, ford focus, peugeout, citroen, renault all have a common platform and that either the volvo or the mazda is the pick of the bunch?

The Volvos have diesel particle filters which can block up and may cost big bucks to get them right again. The turbos will give bother if they are not serviced and must use the correct oil. Other than that they can give a few oil leaks but nothing series. I'd get rid of the diesel particle filter. The car is based on the Focus.

Out of interest I rang a couple of Volvo dealers, closest one to me in Athlone said 140,000km. McGinleys in Letterkenny, who supplied the car originally said 240000km.

Thanks for the help, seems it's probably ok for a while yet.
