Back on a learner permit after a break; do I need the EDT?

I started off driving bikes and had a car provisional at the time, but I never drove a car so I let the car license expire.

I recently started learning to drive a car again, so technically I'm on my third learning permit for a car, but am I really back to square one and have to do the EDT?

I was not asked for evidence of applying for the test when I applied for my new car learning permit a few months ago, so this makes me think I need the EDT.

My driving instructor thinks I don't need the EDT though, because the date range on my learner permit is now 1999 - 2013 (or maybe 2014, I don't have it to hand).

My car permit was expired from maybe 2002/2003 to 2011.

Has anyone experience the same or know how it works?

If your permit has been expired for more than 5 years you need to start from scratch. That means doing a theory test, once passing you must apply for a learner permit. This will then be considered your first Learner Permit and you must follow all the current regulations. So you will need to complete EDT.

Thanks, that's what I thought. I did have to submit a theory test certificate when I got the current permit.

Hi there,

I just had my provisional licence reissued in the last few weeks, just wondering if I will have to sit the EDT? The licence was not expired over 5 years and has code 992 on it?

I think you might be ok; mine has 991 which I think indicates the first provisional, 992 indicating your second; so long as you got your first before April last year (I think) I would say you are ok
