I wonder how many people never shop around, and just carry on with the same insurer?

Last week I got my renewal quote from Liberty Insurance (Formerly Quinn Direct). Bones of €790. Quick online quote of €580. Same car, same person, same details. No accidents or claims. Last year was about €450 IIRC.

They eventually "matched" their quote, but I transferred to AA car insurance for €40 less, and a free fuel card for 2c off every litre of petrol.

Really bugged me, but didn't surprise me. They were trying to rob me of €210, and wanted to see would I pull them on it.

You don't think that might have been a option in between year two and three?

I've done that the last few years in a row, online quote gives better than the renewal :D

Renewal letter wantin 974, put my details into same companies website, exact same cover, 650.... The same company! Scam!

They always give a discount to new customers online, they are gambling on an amount of customer inertia. Usually a quick call along the lines of "your website quotes me xyz, yet the renewal letter quote xyz+150" usually elicits a "oh, yes, sir, we'll match that, no problem" reply. I've switched providers several times over the last few years when they don't match their own online engine.

I've never been with the same insurer for 2 consecutive years. Always cheaper else where. I know they give discounts for new customers but isn't meant to be something in the order of 10 times more expensive to get a new customer rather than retaining a current one?

Every year I go through this with the same company. They usually quote me €200 odd more then the last year's fee and I always ring them back with a quote cheaper and they match it. It's standard at this stage so doesn't really bother me though a waste of everyone's time.

That's why the offer lower prices on new quotes and lump the extra onto your renewal.

Personally I go with the cheapest options I want. I refuse to do the companies work by getting a better quote and seeing if my current company will match it. Give me your best price first or I change.
