Mechanic tells me one of my brake calipers is ceased. Its a 2001 S40. I was looking online to price a new one and it seems they are all used ones that have been refurbished, you pay a deposit and you send back the old ones to get your deposit back. Is this normal? I havent seen any new ones or maybe I am looking in the wrong places. Would they be reliable? Still waiting on a price from my mechanic.
Prices I have seen online vary from around £36-€140.

its perfectly normal to get refurbished calipers. I would go with that over one off a scrapped car tbh.

Local motor factors or your dealer should be able to give you a choice of new or refurb.
I would never get one from a scrappy, not when it comes to something as critical as brakes.
Refurbished one will have every major part replaced or repaired, got one for her MX5 in exchange for the old, knackered one. been working fabulously, no problems. Just be very thorough bleeding your brakes, was pumping away for ages till the bubbles cleared.

This is the cheapest one I found http://www.carbrakecalipers.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=31651
Pictures look a bit strange to me or is just that they usually show it from the other side?

Can you get a used one, and send that off for refurb?

The way it works is that you pick up a refurb unit, remove the old one, fit the "new" one and send your knackered old unit to the refurb crowd.
Or in my case the refurb unit was sent to a motorfactors, I had removed the old one from the car and just did a swap for the recon unit.
You will get credit for the old unit against the new one.
So no point locating a second hand unit when getting a refurb caliper.
