    Guys,

I suggest that everyone who takes the time to read or respond to this thread should also contact their local TD. This is a Government supported scheme, so hopefully someone can create a bit of noise.

The initial aims of the scheme were quite positive, but it is seriously flawed in it's current state, and is doing more harm than good.

I have done just that, adding copies of the Maldron Hotel ad, and a couple of other links to dodgy internships as well. I have also asked a series of questions relating to the scheme.

Will let you know if my local TD's even BOTHER to read it or even respond....

My local TD responded to me within 40 minutes agreeing with most of my points, and promising to forward my concerns over to the Minister. Quite pleased with that level of effiency to start with!

Well - A small updae for those who might be interested....

I e-mailed all four of the local TD's last night. One has replied so far, simply stating that she passed the mail on to Minister Burton's office who will (allegedly) respond to me directly.

    Don't hold your breath!:p

Sure if enough people do that you'd be surprised what you might achieve. I don't think any of the suggestions people here will make on the scheme would be in any way controversial, only a few tweaks to make the whole thing better.

What is really needed is someone to organise quality control. Not every job deserves to be included in the scheme obviously, so establish key entry criteria, and liaise with participants to gain feedback from their experiences.

Perhaps they can get an intern to do that!?

Funny you should say that. That was one of the questions I asked! Well - one of the half dozen I asked, anyway...

I've just got an e-mail receipt from the Dept of Social Protection. So I know the Minister has got my mail. We'll see if she responds.

This thread reminds me of all the bloody corruption in the country, a**holes taking advantage of a system thats designed to help.

I hope no one is stupid enough to take on one of these internships, you will end up just being used like a slave for someone elses gain.

    Makes me sick.

Keep up the good work people.

Kinda like what the FAS work placement does. They actually come to have a meeting with you during the placement, speaking to the mentor as well. They're supposed to do 2 checkups but they only came to the office once...
I did a placement in a small office, 1 full-time employee and the 2 owners. I loved my work placement, near the end they tried to organise enough money to employ me but the bank laughed at them. It's just the 2 owners working in the office now. :(

But from my experience with Jobbridge they're a joke. I made a complaint to them while on my internship, I didn't hear anything back from them after 1 email and 2 phonecalls. The 2 representatives I spoke to just told me any problem I have I should bring to my mentor... He was the problem! So I ended the internship.
I'm currently doing a FAS course while searching for a paid job. I have applied to one internship (as I can do 4 more months), it's for an administration assistant in a little b&b. I'm not naming and shaming them as I think they're a genuine case.

Oh there's loads of examples on the website.

As anBodhran says, every time we spot a dodgy ad - REPORT IT!!! TELL YOUR LOCAL TD. I reported the ad I put up yesterday as an example. I got a phone call at 7pm, promising a full investigation. What form that will take, I don't know. I'll keep you posted.

Here's the link to the online complaint form: http://www.jobbridge.ie/feedback.aspx

I personally believe that as this is a flagship Government policy, politicians are desperate for it to work. Fair enough. But all they are doing is flinging up any and all roles without even checking in order to say: Look! We have loads of internships, employers are fully engaged with the process and it's working!!

There are loads of great opportunities on there where employers HAVE taken the time and trouble to think about making the experience a positive one for both parties. But there's always employers who will seek to take advantage of the situation (Never waste a good recession and all that) and seek to exploit it to their own advantage.

I've found it's no good getting angry. I'll just keep on reporting these ads and keeping the Complaints Department very busy. Maybe then they'll get their arses in gear and start putting proper controls as to what goes on the website.

    And breathe...:D

I just received a written response to my query re the internships from Joan Burton.

Quite detailed - 2.5 pages, is basically says that they have systems in place to ensure the quality and integrity of the positions meet a reasonable standard, this included monthly reviews and random monitoring. She states that if candidates have complaints they will be fully investigated.

It says that firms must also agree that the internships must not displace an existing position.

There was also mention that they want to take people off the live register, while keeping them at home and away from the threat of emigration.

So, I'm reasonably happy with that. My TD has done his job, Joan has responded in a timely fashion. I'll be responding that while all the above might have been intended, there are still unsuitable positions getting through the net.

    Pretty good - Well done!!:D

I'm still awaiting a response from the Minister about my mail, but I assume it'll be along the same lines as yours AnBodhran as well as a complaint I made earlier this week.

I went for a Jobbridge interview this week. I was told that Jobbridge do ask for quite a lot of feedback which is pretty detailed. Apparently a questionnaire is sent every month. On this, they have to detail what training was given, and how the intern is performing in the role amongst other things.

I think it'll be a case of watch this space!

From my experience on a WPP program, they may say on paper that a FÁS member will visit the workplace to assess the progress of the internship, but in reality they don't have the manpower to go to every place in the country that is using a FÁS sanctioned internship.

I could be wrong, but I think these have being doing some sort of proper internships before it became government sponsored, and not like the mickey-mouse fudge packing internships at big supermarkets that are lately all the rage.

Ah, that makes more sense. The way it was worded caused me to lol. Ah well, glad the politicians are sort of looking into it. Someone posted about an internship that they get €50 extra that works in the government offices, so I'd wonder how seriously they'll take the complaints?

Spotted this a couple of weeks ago, a RECRUITMENT AGENCY (no less!!) advertising a Job Bridge Internship!!!! How the hell are they getting away this?

    The job's now been removed.

From what I could see, the internship was for a client of the agency who needed an intern. Nothing wrong with that!

Maybe the client realised that it was a waste of time paying the recruitment agency when the post could've been advertised on the Jobbridge website for free! :D

ABajaninCork;78077220, of course the job posting was for a company and not the recruitment agency itself. Here is an insight to how recruitment agencies work. They have KPI's to work to and often post fake job postings to get CV's in so they can get leads off them. In the case I highlighted above, this agency where doing exactly that.

This one has really pissed me off. As someone who used to work in another curves I can confirm it takes no skills whatsoever to work here, there is minimum training required and working there would not benefit anyone in any way if they wanted another job in the fitness industry.
