    Hi,

I've been looking for a new car and thinking of getting a mini cooper/one. I've been looking at getting a 2004. now my questions is what are the most common problems/faults/things to look out for when buying a Mini. I know that some of them can have issues with the gear box but anything else people can advise me of? Thanks in advance!

Try the search function, it's been discussed a couple of times. Short run down :

Budget for a Power Steering Pump if it hasn't been done already, Dealer Price 1200 euro, independent mechanic about 600-700. Turn the steering from full left lock to full right lock without moving the car. If you feel any notchiness through the turn, walk away, you'll need to put a steering rack in it. Some of the very very early ones (2001 ish) had issues with Body Control modules.

The car was facelifted in September 2004, so if you're buying one, get the new one. It's easy to identify, the dashboard is made from 3 pieces instead of 5. It got new bumpers, lights, revised interior trim, and a slightly better gearbox which was quicker to accelerate and didn't crunch as much going into reverse.

They are also extremely prone to coolant leaks leading to further issues(head gasket) if not checked/noticed and given the stereotype mini owner, most will not have had levels regularly checked.

Early ones also suffer sticking brake calipers and various electrical issues.
