Blackberry on Vodafone Pay as You go - Getting Weird (new) data charges, please help!

Hi,

I've got a Blackberry Curve 8520 on Vodafone Pay as you go, and I've noticed over the last while that chunks of my credit would just disappear, when I hadn't used the phone for anything (including bum or bag calls, lol). Anyway, I got onto Vodafone by email, and they got onto me today saying:

"Having checked your account I can see your credit is being used by
Blackberry internet connections. These occur every day, as the
Blackberry is programmed to update automatically, and cost 50 cent
for the day.

You can deactivate data connections to prevent these charges. Only
text messages and calls are then available. Follow these instructions
to activate or deactivate data connections.

1. Find "Mobile Network Options"

* Press the Menu key.
* Scroll to Manage Connections and press the Navigation key.
* Scroll to Mobile Network Options and press the Navigation key.

2. Activate or deactivate

* Highlight the drop down list next to Data Services and press
the Navigation key.
* Highlight On or Off and press the Navigation key.

3. Exit

* Press Disconnect to return to standby mode."

I'm guessing they're referring to data services charges? I got the phone last summer, and I think I was being charged for data services initially, but somehow I managed to switch that off. So, does anyone know how to switch this off without having to disconnect myself from the internet altogether, sure it's hardly a "smart" phone without them, and to be honest that's usually all I use it for - but at home, on the WiFi. It's just really annoying because that comes to E15/15.50 a month, and to be honest, I don't even usually use that much credit, and wasn't using that much credit, up to the last few months, so somehow the data services thing has been turned on, argh!
