I know there is "no room for sentiment in professional rugby" and all that...but I really hope Strings gets a good deal from someone like Connacht to play out the remainder of his career. Would hate to see him exiled or continuously moving around for the next 18 months/2 years before he retires. Such a good servant to the game and a true professional.

I hope so too, a great player, a great guy, a true ligind :D

Tbh I'd still take him over Williams who really doesn't look good enough to make it at the top level. He'd do well at Connacht, still well ahead of Murphy and POD.

So Donnacha Ryan has signed a two year deal that keeps him in Munster. Great news for Munster and I'm delighted for him.

    Excellent news.
Great news alright, hopefully he'll be able to step out of the long shadows cast by POC and DOC.

Well I don't think he'll ever reach POC levels but they're not exactly the same type of player and I think he'll become one of the best locks in Europe over the next season or so. Tbh I didn't think we'd be saying that this time last year.

Ryan Signs On For Two More Years
    13 March 2012, 8:57 pmBy The Editor
The IRFU announced today that Donnacha Ryan, Man of the Match against Scotland last Saturday, has signed a contract that will see him remain with Munster until the end of the 2013/14 season.
Suggestions in the media that the Tipperary native was unhappy in Munster and eyeing a move to Leinster - "news to me", according to the player himself - have proved unfounded and he joins colleagues Niall Ronan, Billy Holland, Tommy O'Donnell and Denis Hurley in committing to Munster for the next two seasons.
Dave O'Callaghan has accepted a Development contract while Marcus Horan is understood to have agreed terms for a one year contract extension.

Shame on you Hugh Farrelly for **** stirring regarding Ryan.

Good to see Hurley signing on and Ronan certainly deserves an extension based on his form before his injury.

Holland is an interesting one, I would have thought he would get released given he has younger competition. However he has made more appearances this season already than any other so he is obviously considered an important squad player at this stage. You would wonder where this leaves Foley and Nagle though.

Good to see DOC2.0 duly rewarded and the Horan extension seems necessary, given Darragh Hurley's career is in danger according to rumour.

Hopefully an announcement will be made on promotions from the academy soon.

People seemed to think that Holland, and maybe TOD would be moving on. I think TOD can become a HC-standard player. Holland will always do a job but I just think that he's going to either limit other young players coming through or just not get enough gametime. I like him and everything but he could be an excellent player for someone like Connacht.

And should the new coach not get some say in what players he wants to keep around? I know we haven't announced one but how about if somebody comes and they don't fancy Holland at all, and he gets frozen out?

So there'll be POC, DOC, Ryan, Holland, and Nagle in the second row next season. Possibly MOD too!

According to Munsterfans, Munster A are supposed to be playing friday night in musgrave park against some sort of selection of academy and club players. Theyve done slightly similar things in the past with club players playing with academy players against irish 20s http://www.munsterrugby.ie/news/6763.php
Presume any top players from div 1A/B not in munster system will play in this?

While I find it hard to defend the press I have to say how do you know Ryan was telling the truth in saying it was the first he heard of it?

And Foley (or is he being let go?)

He might well want to move on for his own benefit.

So I'd guess the orders going to be POC, Ryan, DOC, Foley, Holland/Nagle based on this season.

Seems like overkill alright. Who knows what will happen though.

Barring an injury three of these will be missing for international matches that leaves 3 for Munster games. Hardly overkill.

MOD finishing up at the end of this season?

That's a good point. For the 4/5 games that happen during the international period Munster would be pretty stretched without them.

Don't know about MODs future plans, but if he stays it'll be very tough on the younger lads for the next year!

    Depressingly true

The fact is that even if DOC is not in the 22 (which he will be), he'll still be centrally contracted so will be unavailable for large chunks of the league.

Cheer up Emmet, there are plenty worse things going to happen to you today :)

But it does reinforce the point that there is a need for another two or three locks outside the international trio. Whether Foley is happy watching from the stands during the big games is another matter, he might be better off in Connacht.

I think it reinforces the point that whomever is in charge of the central contracts made a massive massive mistake.

Only for the few that never rated him.

The contract runs until the end of the 2013/14 season, we'll surely play more than 4/5 international games and as you know centrally contracted players have restrictions on the number of Pro12 games they can play.
    yup, which is depressing

again only for those that dont rate him.

    DOC?

Tony McGahan struggling with the decision too?

If Foley is behind Holland or Nagle next season, Leinster should be all over him like a rash as should Ulster. He's a very talented bloke. He has impressed me much more than Nagle over the last 18 months. Leinster are still going to have to sign 2 locks at least in the next year.

  • Posts: 24,798 ✭✭✭✭ Clementine Helpless Scalpel

exactly, and the idea that having a central contract means you are being chosen regardless of other options.

The wisdom of donating a smattering of caps to someone who's not considered to be a first string starter at the cost of development of the Tuohy and Toners of this world is ridiculous tbh.

Alaways amused by the reaction to DOC here, he's a super player and generally he's a big game player too. He's a complete workhorse too. Now, he might be on the way out but he still offers a lot to Ireland. The idea that Nagle or foley are anywhere near his level yet is misplaced, imo, both are good prospects, probably have a more complete skillset but i haven't seen anything to suggest they have his workrate or physicality, yet.

I could see him going tbh, but his latest injury probably lessens his prospects some bit. Tbf, both him and Nagle have been very prone to picking up injuries, it's something that's held them back. By comparison DOC and MOD are fairly durable.

I agree DOC is underrated by some but there's no way he should be on a central contract at this stage.

Question: Is Ryan on a central contract now?
