math question

    hi all,

    im wondering if someone can help me out with a math question. i already know the answer to the question however, when i do out the sum myself i get a different answer :/ . the question is =

    brian earns 280 euro per week. he has a weekly tax credit of 30 euro. he pays income tax at the rate of 25%. what is his take home pay.
    the answer to question on the book is 240 euro. when i do it out, i get 100 euro :/ .

    can anyone tell me where im going wrong ???

    Think I know where you may be going wrong.

    Here is my solution:

    Pay = €280
    Income Tax @ 25% = €70 (280/100*25 = €70)

    As his tax credits are €30 you take this away from the income tax paid

    €70 - €30 = €40. €40 is the amount of tax this person will pay for the week.

    So €280 - €40 tax = €240 take home pay.

    Get 25% of 280:
    280 (divided by) 100 = 2.8 = 1%
    2.8 X 25 = 70 (income tax)
    280-70=210 + 30 (tax credit) = 240

    Or you could've minused the Tax credit from 70 and take the 40 from 280 (70-30=40, 280-40=240)

    kk, i appear to be stuck again, lol. can anyone help with this algebra equation please???

    una is 7 yrs older than maeve. if the sum of their ages is 29, find both of their ages.

    EDIT
    Haven't done algebra in ages but here's the solution:
    Una = x + 7
    Maeve = x

    x+7+x=29
    2x=29-7
    2x=22
    x=11
    So now, if Una is 7 years older, you add the 7 onto 11.
    Maeve=11
    Una=18
    If you read this post before the edit, I had the Maeve= y rather than x. I still got the same answer but using x for both of them is the proper way to do it (and easier)

    You should always take a couple of seconds to double check your answer but putting it back into the question.

    So, is 18 seven more than 11? - Check.
    Is 18 + 11 = 29? - Check.

    I actually did that part before I edited it, but then didn't see the need for it while editing so i deleted it :P

    :)There's no need to put it in the exam of course, but it's a good practice to get into.
    Calculation errors are very easy to make when under pressure and a simple little check when you're finished will let you know you have it right.
