How did you fund your postgrad?

    I want to apply for the Doctorate in Counselling Psychology, preferrably this year or next year. The fees are around €13,000 a year (3-year course) and I was wondering if anyone could let me know how they were able to pay for such fees. Would a grant cover even a partial amount (I know the budget won't help me on that end)? Or is there another way to get funding? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    The government has cut the student grants for postgrad students so no is the quick answer these days. Scholarships are different.

    For me I saved for mine, costing nearly €6000 this year (Post Grad Diploma, 1 year). For funding options there are scholarships you can apply for, but it might be also worthwhile contacting the college to ask if they have any relationships with industry that might sponsor you. Usually easier for the Science-y PhDs though I'm led to believe.

    The people that I know either got funding through a larger project their supervisor is involved in that is backed by SFI+industry; or through an IRCSET scholarship.

    Although I'm not sure if we're talking about Ph.Ds(as the above are) or not here.

    Does the HSE not partially fund some of that, or is that only for the Clinical course (providing you work for them for a while afterwards)? Maybe that's gone in this day and age.

    OP, I know a couple of people on that doctoral course and as far as I'm aware they couldn't secure funding through grants. One person had to get a loan from her parents as the banks couldn't offer her reasonable terms for a loan, and another is relying on a combination of savings and a loan from (I think) the credit union. That's only 2 people out of about 15 though; I have no idea about the other students' circumstances.

    There are other costs to consider as well, such as travel to and from placement and paying for personal therapy which is mandatory; you can usually get student rates for this but it's still an added cost.

    It sounds as though the course is very challenging, on both a financial and personal level, but the 2 I know on the course do enjoy it so it's worth pursuing if counseling is definitely what you want to do :) Good luck!
