Is there a way of converting old money to current values? For example an actor in a Hollywood movie from the 1940s might mention his house cost $50,000. How do you convert this to its current value in €. Is this possible to do?

Wolfram Alpha can kinda do it:

Using this search you can find out how many dollars it would be today ($819,422) and that in euro is €622,708.

It's not a perfect indication of how much $50,000 would be today, but it's about as close as you'll get.

The Bureau of Labour Statistics has an inflation calculator that goes back to 1913. This one from Westegg.com goes back to 1800. From there you could use a currency converter to convert it into euros.

I think you can Google it; the only thing is, I'm not sure it will work across currencies, so you would have to do $50,000 in 1950 - for example - into $(X amount here) dollars today, and then convert that amount into your own currency.

Fortunately, most online currency converters don't apply commission, so you will get an accurate figure without having to bother with crap like doing 5% commission on the transaction.
