I have a crappy WD Live media player and it worked great with my windows xp machine but for the life of me I can't get it to work with osx.

I can see the wd on my mac and I can copy stuff to any usb device on the WD live device but for the life of me I can't get the wd live to connect to the mac as a shared network drive when using it on my tv which is really annoying.

Curious if anyone here has one of these devices, and if so any suggestions?

OS X's previous SMB implementation was replaced in Lion with Apple's own version, which supports SMB2 but not SMB1 - which is what WDTV uses. You'll have to find a workaround, either by installing Samba (no thanks) or using a UPnP client. I use Yazsoft's Playback. It works pretty good, better than SMB in most ways, but it doesn't support external subtitles - they have to be embedded in the file. Afaik there are free alternatives available as well.

I'm very cautious about installing WDTV updates and haven't updated in a while, so I don't know if they've done anything to resolve this issue. I doubt it.

Copying files across from my Mac to my WD TV Live Hub has been unusable since the update to OS X Lion. Both my WD TV and Mac are up to date with the latest updates. I can actually copy files from within a Virtual Machine running on my Mac to the WD TV much faster! Madness.

crap anyway, think its time to flog my wd live and just bite the bullet and build a machine for XBMC

Just so you know, this issue isn't isolated to WDTV. You may experience similar problems with XBMC or anything that uses SMB1.
