Despite having access to all the hot altar boys and girls, having to take orders from a Bishop Brennan type would annoy the arse off me.

    So no.

Plus God doesnt exist, so you would just be living a lie.

I'd be a loose cannon of a priest, shouting abuse at my congregation while eating the communion bread like pringles.

Fr. Renegade would be my name :pac:

    Master of the Universe

Good oul Dougal summed it up for me really -

Bishop Facks: So, Father. Do you ever have any doubts about the religious life? Is your faith ever tested? Anything you would be worried about? Any doubts you've been having about any aspects of belief? Anything like that?

Father Dougal McGuire: Well, you know the way God made us all, right? And he's looking down at us from heaven and everything?

    Bishop Facks: Uh-huh.

Father Dougal McGuire: And then his son came down and saved everyone and all that?

    Bishop Facks: Yes.

Father Dougal McGuire: And when we die we're all going to go to heaven?

Bishop Facks: Yes. What about it?

Father Dougal McGuire: Well, that's the bit I have trouble with.

I can't understand why the vast majority of religious people AREN'T priests/nuns. I mean, if you really believe all that, then surely devoting your life to serving God is the right way to live your life.

Having a normal job, wife/husband, kids etc... isn't that being selfish? Aren't you saying "I believe in this religion, but I want a family. I want a normal job. I don't think the religion is important enough to me to dedicate my life to, and it isn't as important as what I want to do. I want to get the benefits of this religion, go to Heaven etc, but I don't really want to have to do anything to get it bar pray and generally lead a good life, the way I want to. I believe God, this supernatural, almighty and infinitely powerful and loving being, exists... but I don't want to completely devote my life to him, even though I'll be rewarded in Heaven forever."

Sure, the Bible says you can have a family etc etc, but wouldn't becoming a priest/nun be a much better way of life if you really believe God exists, and that teaching others about God and praising him and helping others praise him... wouldn't that be great? Wouldn't that be the best way to give thanks to God and worship him? Wouldn't that be the absolute best way to live your life?

Either way, I couldn't be a priest because I hate drinking wine, and even though it obviously becomes the blood of Christ, I'm betting it still tastes like wine. Doing that day in, day out... **** no. Plus I don't believe God exists... but it's mostly the wine thing.

I had intended to be a priest. But the celabacy rule actually turned me off the idea. So yes maybe i would have been.

If i were a priest though i would see myself like a gospal folk singer priest. Except i dont sing to well.

Would I be in charge of parish funds and would anyone notice if a bit of embezzlement went on?

To be fair that is a bit like saying, if eating is so important to people why isn't everyone a farmer. Humans delegate work to individuals so that we can achieve more as a whole.

If it was just a job I'd like to become an atheist priest, I wonder could I take a case against the church when they refuse to train me because of my religion?

I genuinely thought of being a missionary as a teenager. We had a really cool priest come talk to us about his work in Africa.
Then I discovered drink, drugs and nihilism.
    I'm now a agnostic so...

I know a priest who joined up after his wife died. He has a few kids. Very smart man who spent a lot of time working in Africa.

The kiddie jokes are overused and not funny anymore.

In terms of it being a job, sure. In terms of it being a way to practice and spread your faith, the number of other priests or whatever is irrelevant. Devoting your life fully to God by becoming a priest is surely the best way of living life as God intended, yet very few do.

Kiddie jokes will more than likely be associated with the Catholic priests until the end of time, and I don't see that as a bad thing at all, it's the least that organisation deserves.

Not if everyone in your community became a priest, the community would only last until those people starved to death or all just died of old age. It's ok having a small percentage of your community dedicate themselves to a particular cause but if everyone does it human society stops working.
