POSTGRAD APPLICATIONS

    Hi,
I have just applied for a postgrad in NUIG. I am an NUIG student and I am in final year. I need a 2:1 for this postgrad, but I did not get a 2:1 in second year. I am most definitely expecting a 2:1 or higher in 3rd year judging by how things are going so far. Can I expect to have a decision on my application during the first round of application offers even though I do not have my degree result yet?

If not, does anyone know how the system works for applicants who did not achieve a 2:1 in second year, but will hopefully achieve a 2:1 or higher in their actual degree?

    Thanks.

You probably won't get notification until the summer, after you get your results.

If you want more information, email and/or talk to the course coordinator of the postgrad.

    What discipline?
Is there much demand for postgrads in your field?

Its run by the school of law as far as I'm sure. Its got 12 places and only started last year. Im not sure if there is going to be too much want for it. Its called peace operations, humanitarian law, and conflict. Its not an area that would interest a lot of people I don't think.

If I dont find out until summer does that reduce my chances of getting it considering they will be giving people offers since much before the summer? Or would the fact that I have applied in the first round benefit me here?

Sorry If I seam a bit uneducated on this stuff but Ive looked at so many postgrads and its hard to find the information you ACTUALLY want to hear when you go to different postgrad events in the college or read most of the available literature.

    Thanks for the help lads.

I was doing a research project with the course coordinator so I sat in some of the classes: it's a competitive course and most of the class seem to come from overseas. There were a lot of people in the class who'd been doing human rights work for years although there's still a few students who went in straight from undergrads.

If you got less than a 2.1 last year but are improving this year then they'll probably give you a conditional offer where as long as you can keep up a good average in final year, they'll accept you once your results are out. It's a very intensive course though and the reading load is very heavy, plus the students are really fascinating. It's very, very interesting and course coordinator is brilliant. If you're interested in the subject and are willing to put in the work it seems really class.
