Applied the settings for my xbox for the us content.

    Definitely, definitely worth the subscription!

How long before they apply a fix for it though.......

Of course they probably could stop us having access at anytime. But Canadians have been using this trick for a while to access Netflix USA and it hasn't been stopped. So hopefully they won't do anything.

You're paying Netflix the same 6.99 whether you're watching US or UK content. They've no real incentive to stop you

I've no doubt production companies aren't too happy but VPN and DNS work arounds have existed for years.

started the Unblock-us.com 1 week trial by entering my email address.
Did I need to do this?
Or could I have just entered the DNS IP addresses supplied on their website?
Will this just stop working after a week? If so, how do they do this?

You can try just entering the DNS details but sooner or later it will ask for an email address.

I`m pretty sure it will stop after a week. I got an email from them last night letting me know that my free trial was nearly up and that I needed to subscribe to continue. It was still working when i checked this morning. I think my week will be up in the next day or so. I`ll post an update if and when I get disconnected. There were a few on here that took up the trial a day before me so I`m sure their trial is up today. Be interesting to here, if they could post, how they are getting on.

I just changed my DNS setting on the PS3, didnt sign up for anything. It will be a week on Sunday so I will update if it stops working after that.

did some folks get the bbc player working on the ps3 with the unblock-us dns settings? i tried finding the player but nowhere to be seen...tried creating an uk account too but still couldn't find it.

any other players/services like these that are enabled via unblock for ps3?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,818 ✭✭✭Minstrel27

You have to download the iPlayer when you sign into your UK account.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,483 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

I set up UK PSN account, then went into the PSN store, clicked on a couple of thigs (playstation home was one) as I tried to fiigure out where it was. Went back to the main screen and the 'other channels' screen was back. BBC, ITV and 4OD players all there. You need to input your US Unblock e-mail (I didn't bother signing up - so no idea how their functionality)

You can use 4oD in Ireland, so maybe the app works without the block (once downloaded and installed)

You need to set up a UK PSN store account and when logged in under that user, go to the main screen where you have your Netflix icon. Scroll up to a rainbow coloured icon, may be listed as TV or something and that should bring you to a set of icons that you can click on to download, BBC iplayer being one of them.

Once you have it installed it will stay on your home screen not matter what account you log in under.:)

When you go into the settings on the PS3 does it show them filled in? If so just take them down and write them back in the same.

If not, one idea I can think of is get to your pc (that is connected to the network wired or wirelessly) and if in xp select start, run and type "cmd" (without the commas obviously) and hit enter. If you have windows 7 press start and in the "search for programs and files type "cmd" and hit enter.

Eitherways you should be looking at the daunting text based command prompt. Type in "ipconfig" (again, no inverted commas) and hit enter. Scroll up and you should see:
    IPv4 address 192.168.xxx.xxx
    Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway 192.168.xxx.xxx

Where x's are numbers. Note yours might be different than that but I doubt it. Anywho take these down and on your PS3 enter the subnet mask and gateway the exact same if it is asking for them. For the IP address leave the first 3 sets of numbers the same and change the last one to something higher e.g 15 or 25 (don't go too high!). That should do the trick.

(You might get an easier reply from someone that owns a PS3 and knows how to get it's IP but if youre stuck...)

Thanks...got it working...Went completley the wrong way about it on ps3 and persisted with it instead of trying other ways...

Anyway have it now...Such a difference..

LOL , all this chat about bypassing Geo Lock , If it were to take place over in the Broadband or TV Forum's you would be called a criminal ,
Anyway Overplay.net are another provider of this service and I have used them for over a year without any issues.

There's a ton of Disney stuff if you have kids (or kids at heart) on the US system.

Noticed too an unreal amount of WWE stuff (have no interest at all, just stood out to me in the 'Sports and Fitness' section)

Fair few more US sitcoms (stuff like The League which will never be shown in Ireland/UK)

    I'll enjoy my week

I also heard its coming for the 3DS in a few weeks, just so you all know.

Personally speaking, if I only got the Irish netflix, I would probably cancel my subscription in a few months(there is plenty on there to keep me going for a while).
My PS3 and any of the xboxes that have access to the US site are not hacked.

With the US site, I don't see myself letting my subscription lapse.

Thanks, I wont bother for a while so. Maybe around sept or oct or something. Give it a while to build up over here.

I'd agree with all of these.

I'll add that I don't think I'd pay for US unblock and netflix. But €7 a month for the US netflix is pretty good

If the DNS thing is changed, I wouldn't pay for it, or the UK?Ireland netflix

    unhacked PS3 btw

Hmmm setup a uk psn then noticed that BBC iplayer was already on my active player profile. Handy.

In a way this probably suits netflix. All these people 'in the know' using the US servers at times when they arent as busy due to the 5 hr minimum time difference and also causing less of a strain on the irish servers due to this. We are basically doing them a favour. Hurrah for us!!

Hmmm... it does suit Netflix, and it does suit unblockUS as long as they can dump the traffic into a big transatlantic data pipe.

It does not suit the content providers who have complex models for how shows are sold in different territories. We may all disagree with how these work, but that's what they do.

It also doesn't suit the ISPs in Ireland, who will be coping with odd data patterns without the assistance of data caching that Netflix would normally be doing for local customers.

I really don't know how this will pan out. Netflix cannot set geo controls on a per account basis because those rights agreements are based on territories and not accounts, so a US customer in Ireland is supposed to get Irish content only and vice versa. Any access of Irish accounts via a US IP could be legitimate access while on holiday. Of course Netflix knows that traffic through a proxy is probably a misuse, but as pointed out they don't care. They won't take steps until forced to, and such steps will be a complicated process, where the content providers threaten Netflix with withdrawing rights unless the proxy is blocked, and then the proxy sites can sue Netflix for interfering with Internet traffic. With this mess it's easy to see why all parties are turning a blind eye to a certain level of infringement. The unknown question is what level of infringement is enough to trigger action.

Quite possibly, this will just keep working. What I'm more worried about, rather than a shutdown is severe impact on internet speeds. I mean we all know a massively popular Netflix will strain the infrastructure here, and that's assuming that Netflix has servers "at the edge of the network" as their CEO says. If their servers are on the other side of the Atlantic, clearly things will be much worse.

    Ix.

Yeah I stuck eastenders on for a minute and had a perv at whitney then turned it off again.

Knowing me I probably signed up on the ukpsn when I got the PS3 or something. RTE player never worked for me on it haha, I only tried it once or twice though.
