For anyone needing/using a vpn service, www.overplay.net as well as offering a great range of vpn server locations (incl Ireland, UK, US) now includes a SmartDNS feature. It seems to be basically the same as what the unblock-us service offers. It is included in their $9.95 monthly fee.

I am based in Portugal. I have set SmartDNS up on my main router and I can now access hulu, BBC iPlayer, 4OD, RTE Player etc on all my web devices without going down the vpn route. I can still use the direct vpn feature when required.

I have set up a second router with Overplay’s DD-WRT specific router vpn application. It allows me to connect the router directly to any of their vpn servers. I have my Sony Bravia connected to this router. I can therefore watch the TV3 Player content directly on my tv (when set to Irish server) or iPlayer and Demand 5 (when set to UK). Still waiting for RTE Player on the Sony Bravia platform! Using the second router means I keep my full internet speed for the rest of the house.

I am not a tech expert, so I found their tech support great. They have detailed info on their site but will also walk you through the set up process if needed.

As an emigrant, it has been a great solution for viewing Irish content abroad. I hope this helps someone else out there.

By the way, does anyone have any idea when Netflix (Irl & UK) will be available on the Sony Bravia platform? I can get it on my tv when routed to the US. I will definitely sign up to Netflix, if I can get it directly on my tv.

    My question:
Do I need to sign up for 'US blocker' after 7 days - if so how much is it and is it available through the same link Sparrow originally posted?

Yes you will need to subscribe to it, theres a link on the original page.
The monthly subscription is $5.00 or a yearly sub of $50.00.

I have no idea about these things but is this free smartdns of any use?

Seems to give a US ip address.

Does anyone know how to configure a UPC Cisco router to get the US Netflix?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,921 ✭✭✭Wossack

the upc cisco router is so locked down, Im not sure theres much at all you can do

if you do manage to get onto the maintenance pages, on my one at least, it would revert to factory defaults nightly :(

I replied to your PM with full instructions. Don't fret, it's super easy when you know what your doing.
I followed the instructions on the site, but when I click the link provided it says no items for me to purchase. What am I doing wrong?

I know there's a lot of repitition on the thread, an I'm not trying to add to it, but I am getting slightly confused now.
I had previously registered for the Irish Netflix, I've followed the instructions Sparrow has posted and now have the US version on the PS3 and the Irish version still on my ipad. So far so good - everything seems top be working perfectly and I'm going to try the UK PSN account thing tonight to get the Iplayer etc.

    My question:

As far as I can see, you only need to subscribe if you are using it in a web browser. I think it uses a cookie to authenticate, but they cant use a cookie to authenticate on the xbox. This may be a flaw in there business model. I dont know how they can authenticate users of their service, unless they used IP addresses, but this wouldnt work that well, as most people have static IP addresses.

However, I will definitely be subscribing because I think its well worth it. giving access to Iplayer etc as well, and it all works so seamlessly. Long may it last.

EDIT: Think I figured it out... after setting up the DNS stuff I made a UK PSN account, downloaded netflix and put in my Irish account details. Have no idea if I'm on the US or Irish netflix screen at the moment, but ratings are showing up as R, PG13 etc. Is there any other surefire way of finding out?

Did you have any problems with the WD TV? I'm having trouble with mine, keep getting an error saying "unable to connect to netflix, please try again". Other people on the WD forums seem to be having the same problem too.

I dont think this will work, it looks like a standard dns service. unblock-us works differently as it redirects requests to certain domains (like netflix) through some sort of proxy (I think:confused:)

those ratings sound like your sorted. Troll hunter is on the us one and not the irish one.

I dont know but basically I setup an Irish account, changed the dns settings as outlined in the link posted by the sparrow (i think) and when I relaunched netflix held select and start together to reset and used my irish username and pw which granted me access to the us netflix and no problem accessing films on there.

Have done all this but getting "Unable to connect to netflik.....Hmm

Of the top of my head they have Gurren Lagann. The ghost in the shell tv show, Afro Samurai and few others I've never heard of. In terms of feature films there's the haruhi movie, Ghost in the shell, summer wars, sky crawlers and The girl who leapt through time. Not much of a selection but hopefully it'll improve over time. You can always check with the free month trial anyway.

Yep, its a balls... You need the WD TV Live "Plus" to get Netflix, identical looking for different internals. No longer can I tell everyone that my WD TV plays everything!

FWIW - I quickly added the unblock-us DNS settings to the PS3 and have US Netflix; far better line up!

I wonder too how unblock-us can make money off this as all I did was change DNS and have no other interaction with their service.

    On a sidenote:
