Im thinking of buying a ps3 without a hdd and I have a hard drive from another ps3 knocking about,
So if I was to take the hdd I have already and put it into another console would it work plug and play or are the hdds locked to the console making the ps3 without a hdd completely useless.

The hdd's are encrypted with a per console key. There is a way to unlock your hdd, so it is useable in other ps3's but you need CFW & some Graf tools. But otherwise, all you can do is format the hdd in the new console & thats the only way it'll be useable

does that just count for the save data though ?

Dont know much about ps3 myself hence why I'm asking but what I saw while searching this I read that a ps3 wont start up with out a hdd or a hdd without the ps3 operating system installed in it.

What I really want to know is will a hdd taken from one ps3 with the ps3 operating system installed work on a different ps3, couldn't care less about the save data in the hdd so I dont mind formatting the hdd.

this is very vague when searching.

No, the whole drive is locked via the per console encryption. It won't be useable in any form to another PS3, unless it's formatted on that PS3 in which case you forfeit whats on it.

You can evade this restriction via Linux on a modified PS3 only - http://psx-scene.com/forums/f6/ps3-internal-hdd-encryption-disabled-graf_chokolo-83748/
