I'm currently in my first year of a level 8 course and want to drop out.

I know that I will be obliged to pay a portion of the fees when I return to college next year, but I recall reading somewhere that this sum is determined by what stage in the year I cease my studies.

Can anyone shine some light on the subject? I can't find the dates anywhere.

For NUIG: "If you cancel officially with our Student Contact Centre before 31/01/11 you will be 50% eligible for free fees if you return to 3rd level studies in September 2011. "

UCD: " 'Free' fee students who register and officially withdraw with their Programme Office by completing the Withdrawal Form and returning their student card from Saturday 1 October 2011 to Tuesday 31 January 2012 inclusive are liable for payment of half the Student Contribution Charge and half the Student Centre Levy i.e. €1,079.00*. FURTHER, half of the tuition fee will be claimed on the student’s behalf from the HEA. A student will then be liable to pay half the tuition fee for the equivalent duration of attendance if s/he registers within the next 5 years in any Irish third level institution."

TCD: "Students who do not intend completing the academic year must notify their tutor or other responsible College officer before 31 January 2012 of their decision to withdraw from College to avoid liability for the second instalment of their tuition fees."

So, it would seem to be before the 31st of this month going by these three colleges, however it's worth getting on to your own college fees office just to be sure. :)
