    Anyone seen this??
Paul McGrath : "If I was in Glen Johnson’s situation, I'd have thrown the shirt to the floor,"

    @glen_johnson :

I will support who i want when i want!!! There are a lot of reasons why I'm standing by Luis Suarez!!!

You sound like you have changed your tune anyway. Weren't you predicting blue murder in pre season. I believe you may have also predicted the end of the world, I can't remember fully.

Downing and Henderson signings are still poxy pieces of business
Meireles going to Chelsea is still a moment of utter stupidity by the club

But through superior coaching relative to last year, we are playing better football, and players like Maxi, Bellamy and Johnson have responded excellently to that coaching.

Enrique and Bellamy have been proved great, cost effective pieces of business.

But top four hangs in the balance, in part because we are forced to carry overrated English millstones around our neck for part of every game at least.

In fairness, last year Andy Carroll was having the sort of season Ba is having this year.

Hmm...I think Ba looks better than Andy did last year at Newky, from the highlights I've seen his finishing looks very accomplished and is up there with almost anyone in the PL, but that's just MOTD highlights tbf.. Like someone else mentioned I'm pretty sure he has major injury worries and this put of alot of clubs from touching him.

What you make of Marco Reus, Is he worth a gamble,
I'm sure he could be bought for decent money, 18-25m

In a 4-3-3 with license to attack he could be very good for us I'd feel. I've only gotten to see him a handful of times and most of that is highlights but it seems hes doing pretty well this year for Borussia M(enter rest of spelling here) and got a good few goals from out wide and all.

Doubt he'd want to join us in January though but stranger things have happened I suppose.

Germany really do have a fantastic array of young talent playing in the Bundesligue atm. Their national team could be some force to reckon with at the Euros this summer I feel!

8 more points and an 8 goal swing in goal difference.

First thing that jumps off the page is the pace the leaders are setting compared to last year. Second thing is that imo last year we had a better chance of finishing 5th than this year and we couldn't manage it last year even with Kenny coming in revitalising everything. Worrying...:(

I agree with everything you have written apart from the Hendo comment. I think 20mill could prove quite shrewd in the future. For example who would bat an eyelid if we signed Lucas as he plays right now for 20mill. Nobody. And we would be applauded. With Hendo we have signed potential and therefore I think the jury will have to stay out on him for much much longer than 5-6 months.

We can't really start comparing things to the Woy era, that was a freakish, dark period for the club. Reality is we are way off the pace when it comes to consistency Vs the "smaller sides". Do people think we can finish above two of Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs and thus take 4th place?. Surely not. We are too far behind already the two Manc clubs, the other 3 sides are just not dropping the sort of points we are.

Thats nonsense. Everyone knows we didnt wanna finish 5th and get the Europa League. We're in a much better position than this time last year, and i fully expect us to have a better 2nd half to the season than the first. For the time being, lets just hope Spurs get a result tonight

I'd just like to note something with respect to the season so far. We have 30 points from 17 games. We're essentially 4 points short of where we want to be (34 points to be trading at 2 pts per game). That 4 point shortfall can be traced back to any of a few games where we were the better side but couldn't convert clear chances. I do think there are tactical / personnel deficiencies in how Kenny has managed things so far, but on the whole we aren't a million miles off where we want to be.

There is also no doubt whatsoever in my mind that we are vastly improved relative to where we were this time last season - and all without the services of a still very good player at this level.

It's frustrating, but it could be an awful lot worse.

That's more like the level headed sensible poster I knew!

    Welcome back

I don't for a second believe that Kenny would have settled for 6th over 5th, irrespective of the UEFA Cup being an inconvenience

I,m not going to keep quoting those two tables,
But the winning total this year will be huge it seems,
We take two steps forward,, and man city take 10 steps forward, so now we are still 8 steps behind,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43,313 ✭✭✭✭K-9

I was looking at the comparison to the the table last season, Spurs would have been top and 2 games in hand! The standard has been raised higher this season. Last season we'd have been a point of 4th at this stage. Stating the bloody obvious but those dropped points at home are killers. Last season the top teams could afford dropping points at home to weaker teams, not this season.

Would a draw be the best result tonight?

Just to recap on the game last night. Thought we were great for the first half hour, very unlucky we didn't score in that period. Thing is, that's been the story of our season, we can't be unlucky in every single game. We need to be clinical. A proven goalscorer in the window would do us wonders.

Kenny has us very organised and it's great to see us so solid in defence. Dropping Carragher should have happened long ago. Considering 55 million of our transfer kitty was wasted on Downing and Carroll, I think Kenny is getting the most out of the squad.

I think the difference to previous years is that there is more serious competition for top 4 now. We have Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal with Man City and Spurs all in contention
I think we will struggle simply becasue those teams have better players than us

Yep, reckon a draw would be best. You could argue for any particular result favoring us or the opposite. Spurs will have a sizable lead over us with a game in hand if they win. Chelsea 5 ahead...
I'm hoping for a draw and somehow we can get into a dogfight with Spurs,Chelsea,Arsenal for the two places, but i fear its already too late :(

There's a long way to go yet. One of Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea and Liverpool are bound to hit a bad patch. It's a tough challenge, but it's not even January yet. Plenty of twists in the plot lie ahead. I just hope they are favourable for Liverpool. There's a chance we are the team that implodes.

There is a chance we'll implode, then again there's a chance however unlikely that we'll start banging in a few goals!

We will need a finisher first because Suarez cant do it all by himself.

I think Jermain Defoe wouldn't be a bad signing if we could get him for a reasonable price. Don't think Kenny will be given the money for a big transfer this window, which is understandable.

Plus the way we are actually trying to play the game this season as opposed to last year.

    Statto.com I think, good site:

    http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/premier-league/2010-2011/table/2010-12-13

We'd more points at home though last season, the Away form is saving the team.

The problem is we're coming from a lower level than the others, maybe barring Arsenal, I think they are even in a better position. We've had a radical team and squad change, basically half the squad has been changed in 12 months.

I just have to hope that players like Kuyt and Downing will up their game and start getting goals and assists and Carroll to start knocking in a few. I suppose we've been under performing and hanging in there, Arsenal and Spurs have been over performing for me.

This time last year we'd lost 7 games.

Last season should not be used as anything to compare to. 8 points better off? Not good enough imo.

Agreed. "have ya forgotten last season" seems to be the default answer to any critical analysis this season.

Its easy to remember how sh*t we were and 8 points better off isn't cutting the mustard. And thats not even taking into account the money we spent.

We would have been two points off second place with the same games played last season with our current points total this season.

This season we will be three points off 4th with the same amount of games played as Chelsea if things stay the way they currently are in the Spurs game.

I thought Challenging for 4th was the objective this season, which we are doing ?

I don't think we should be judging ourselves on other teams' standards or last seasons standard. We should be setting our own standard and when you look at the points we've dropped against poor opposition it hasnt been good enough. It's nearly halfway through the season and we've only won 8 games. I do believe that we can pick things up but some new ideas are needed.

Its a valid yardstick in that we'd be a point of 4th and while we'd all still be critical, we'd be very hopeful of 4th.

I suppose it shows that those that thought anything above 4th this season was totally unrealistic.

We all know that what we see on the pitch these days does not compare in anyway to the tripe we had to endure last season .

They only thing lacking is (excuse the disgusting pun) a Fox in the Box .

A CF that spends half his time finishing on the turn , and the other half sliding on his ass .

Someone who gets a sniff and locks on .

No doubting we are creating the chances and in the last five games have dominated for the first 20mins .
We need to get someone to finish the chances created and then let us become more ruthless at finishing games off . home & away .
