Cannot open My Documents

I cannot open the My Documents folder in Windows Explorer. I'm trying all afternoon. Everything else opens as normal, My Pictures, My Music, etc. But when I click My Documents, a blank window opens, and sits there perpetually with the eggtimer icon, followed by (Not Responding).

Any suggestions what I might do next? I have some stuff backed up in an external drive, but there's stuff in there I need. Many thanks.

Did you try going there directly?
In Windows 7, type [DRIVE]:\Users\[USER]\Documents or %UserProfile%\Documents into the main bar.

What OS version (XP/Vista/7/etc) is it?

    Windows 7.

Tried that, same response, the eggtimer and the (Not Responding).

When did you last successfully open the folder, and what, if anything, has changed with the PC since then? (New software, removed software, moved something to my doc, deleted something etc)

It's possible a system restore will sort the problem but it would be better to find out why you have the problem in the first place.

Have you moved the My Documents folder to a different location? I noticed this when I had it on a different physical drive... I once removed the drive and the shell was very unstable, sometimes giving a Server Execution Failed error.
