    For those:
    1. with cars
    2. ready to travel up to 30 km from Poznan
    3. not interested in paying hundreds of euros for world-known hotel brands
    there's an alternative:
http://meteor.turystyka.pl/en/ just enter "Poznan" and then try different categories of accomodation

Matejki Street 63 (near Biedronka discounter). They have something like 1000 places but most probably You have to book a place for Your car (price right now is 1,1 euro per hour). It is operated by Poznan International Fair (info@mtp.pl)

Hi Jacqal. Thanks for the tips. What would you suggest as the best way to get to Gdansk from Poznan if you don't hire a car?

If You won't have a car I would definitely recommend trains. Right now (becuase of railworks) travel time is about 5,5 h but it should be shortned after all the improvements will be completed. Trains are quite reliable and not so expensive. You can check: www.intercity.pl (they're have an English version). And You might need a timetable for Your smartphone (ROZKŁAD PKP downloadable from Android Market).

Most 13/14 night quotes i've got for a 4-man camper have been around 1300-1500.

    4k seems over the top

    Rent one.....

    1. If You are looking for direct connections to Poznan, then You have to start form Berlin Ostbahnhof (East Railway Station).
    2. Time of the journey: 2,5 h
    3. Between 5:00 and 17:50 there are 5 EuroCity trains to Poznan (right now).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 306 ✭✭Jacqal

In case You fly to Berlin and looking for a transport to Poznan, there is an alternative to trains - mini-buses like:
    http://www.berlinexpress.pl/
    http://www.mikrobusy.net.pl/rezerwacja_en.php
    http://www.berlintravel.pl/oferta.php

There are much more - google for "bus Belin Poznan".

Cost is around 35 euros per person (from the airport in Berlin to whatever place You like in Poznan).

    Hi Jacqal,

Im sure people will be looking to buy a Polish Pay as you Go Sim card if they are going to be there for 2-3weeks?

    Any recommendations?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 306 ✭✭Jacqal

The best pre-paid option would be Orange Free "na karte" (that means pre-paid). Here's a link to a page where You can see how the starter looks like:
    http://www.orange.pl/portal/map/map/prepaid_starters?category=STARTER_2&articleId=5188842

You pay 20 zł (less than 5euros) and get 1GB for data transfer. If You boost You account (at the ATM, by internet or at Orange's shops) You can get:
    - by adding extra 25 zł (5,5 euros) - 1,25 GB extra (valid for 30 days)
    - by adding 50 zł (11 euros) - 2,75 GB extra (valid for 90 days)
    - by addibg 100 zł (some 23 euros) - 7 GB extra (valid for 150 days).

That's the best offer on Polish market.

Thanks for that Jacqal. What would be the text/calls rates then(To Ireland and to other polish numbers)?
Do you have a link and I can use Google translate?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 306 ✭✭Jacqal

    If You would like to:
    - call to Polish numbers - 0,29 zł (0,05 euro) per minute
    - sms to POlish numbers - 0,20 zł (0,04 euro)
    - mms to Polish numbers - 0,40 zł (0,08 euro)

Sms to foreign numbers - 0,62 zł (0,15 euro)
MMS to foreign numbers - 3,0 zł (0,7 euro)

But if want to call and sms the offers of other operators might be more attractive. It depends on what would You use the phone for.

Here's a link to a comparison of offers:
    http://www.telecennik.pl/

Keep in mind, that there are many special offers that make all those general tarriffs invalid (e.g. in some cases You can sometimes get 1200 minutes extra for 6-10 zlotys; Tou can buy packets of sms messages etc).

All those pre-paid cards You can get at any supermarket, gas station, post ofice and the like. No problem at all.

I'd advise to not to worry about the prices.
I've read the recent news in local papers in Poznan about these comically astronomical prices in hotels and how the booking websites come up with them.
The deal is that many of the small local hotels are not even listed (at least not yet) in such portals as booking.com etc. If they are, they do not offer all their rooms to such a portal - on the website it looks like all the rooms are taken, while there are still plenty left.
The most massive CHEAP accommodation in town - hostels, dorms, private flats, are not listed either. Especially the ones which will offer accommodation for this one time only. They will press the prices down.
So, just bide your time. There's plenty of room(s) in Poznan.

I've actually been trying to find a free website I could post a message about a flat to let during Euro2012, and couldn't find a reasonable one.
I'm not a hotel owner and don't do such business normally, but I could let my flat for a week or so and take my family away for a while. There's lots of people like me here.
Wouldn't charge more than 120 euro per day for a big 3-bedrm flat, which could house 6-8 persons, in the centre.
Though I may be picky about lodgers, cuz it's my flat and I don't want it wrecked.
If anyone's interested, let me know at kuczynski(AT)icpnet.pl

Anyway, don't believe all you read in the Independent or the Herald. ;)

    Hi Jacqui,

    http://www.camp-rent.pl/english.htm
    require :
30 % 4-5 days after we sign the contract to book the camper van
Second 70 % 3 weeks before rent date
Deposit - 4000 plz block on your Credit Card
    1-2 days before rent date

Is this normal? I would have thought a deposit before paying
on the day would be ok

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 306 ✭✭Jacqal

I've checked their Polish contracts and they have the same requirements (4.000 zlotys deposit before renting a camper). Have been looking for any opinions in the Internet but have found nothing.

Thanks for checking it out. Just a bit concerned about forking out the cash before we arrive. Assume the website is legit though it should be fine. 4,000 Zlotys is fine but wud prefer to pay it / get it blocked on card when we arrive.
