Recalling shelvey is a sensible move, but if Lucas is out for the season we must buy in January. Gerrard can't be back soon enough.

There is no sense at all in going out and spending £20million+ on a DM in January. We already have an outstanding DM in Lucas and he has a knee injury that he will recover from! Spending silly money replacing him means that you will end up with 2 players of the same type and level competing for one spot and leaves us with a fair chunk of our transfer budget basically wasted when Lucas does return.

The whole point of an academy is to bring through young players and Dalglish has shown a lot of faith in the younger lads. It would be better to spend the money where the team really needs it and give Spearing an extended run to try and prove himself. If he isn't up to it then there are other options in the squad, for example Agger is fairly mobile, has a good range of passing and good game awareness. No reason he couldn't move forward and play as a deep holding midfielder. Or we could do away with the Lucas role and play 3 at the back. A lot of people see Kelly as being a CB in the making, a spell as a DM might help ease him in there. And if Gerrard can act responsibly and be tactically disciplined he could be an excellent deep lying midfielder (more Alonso than Mascherano but well able to tackle). And if all of those options fail then we should be looking for on loan or free transfers for teh hole - I know Viera has retired now but someone of that type; been around, has teh experience but won't be a potential block for Lucas when he is fit again.

Losing Lucas is a huge hit - he has been in amazing form. But it's not the end of the world, there are options!

Just seen that Dalgish is at the Celtic v Atletico game. Wonder if he's looking at anyone in particular.

Someone playing for Atletico I hope (Turan or Diego Godín)

Kayal from Celtic would fill the Lucas void

Maybe he could be looking at Celtic's club captain and soon to be out-of-contract midfielder Scott Brown (if he is playing that is!) as a short-term replacement for Lucas while he's injured? Would be cheap enough in January and could well be sold on for a profit in a year or two.

More likely he's just watching his former club on a big European night.

    Devastating news about Lucas.

    Is Comolli alongside him?

I'd say Shelvey back means there isn't much chance of seeing Gerrard back soon, only 3 fit CM's means he'll be back up and he'll be called upon at some stage.

It's still a big step up for him but the couple of months playing will have helped.

Probably would have helped having Meireles about but Spearing is the best option as a DM, would have just meant not calling Shelvey back.

Yeah - not a fan of it to be honest.

CM was a weak area even before Lucas got injured. We dont need a carbon copy of Lucas, just someone who can deputise while hes injured and maybe even play alongside him in future.

I think you have just inadvertently proven why we need a quality replacement. We cant have a situation where if Lucas gets injured we need to change the way the entire team plays (3 at the back) or play our best central defender out of position. Spearing is ok for the odd game here and there, but we will not get a top 4 finish if he starts in the middle for the rest of the season.

Probably not a popular opinion on here but this is just another reason why letting Meireles go was madness. He should have been given the payrise as agreed - it doesnt matter that it was agreed with a previous manager.

Devastating news if Lucas is out for the rest of the season as seems likely. I really fear for us now, I think it could have a huge impact on us, similar to the Alonso shaped hole that was left when he departed in the summer.

Just as everything was looking good I'm now suddenly very pessimistic again.

Anyone who knows stuff about these type of injuries, are these injuries that are likely to recur in the future? Could this even mean that in the longterm Lucas may become a crock??

If Chelsea fans had a banner like that about Liverpool players we would say it lacked class. I dont see it any different the other way around. Just not a fan of abusive banners - focus on ones that support the team. Also, I like Lampard and so have never been a fan of the 'fat' jibes.

Our best XI at the moment is probably:

    Reina
    Johnson-Skrtl-Agger-Enrique
    Spearo
    Henderson-Adam
    Downing
    Bellamy
    Suarez

Without Lucas or Gerrard, we need 3 in the middle. Luckily, the fixtures are fairly kind to us until January. We've already played all our CL rivals and Everton, where Lucas is most effective.

I'd imagine Kenny and Clarke already have a number of targets for January, but hopefully the current squad can prove themselves over the next month.

So much for having too many midfielders! Gutted to hear that lucas' injury seems to be as bad as we all feared.

I don't think we'd be any less worried, put it that way. Meireles can't play the Lucas role, I'd have more faith in Spearing for that.
