Nope. There'll be streams of course.

This fixture has been a shambles from day 1 imo.

Might be hard to get a stream.

Sounds good - only 9 more to go for a team of Lucas's :)

Will Coates get a game tonight? He needs to play as often as possible - Agger won't play every game this season so cover badly needed

I reckon we will see Andy 'Lucas' Carroll and Sebastian 'Lucas' Coates playing tonight. Jay 'Lucas' Spearing may also get a look in I think.

Can anyone tell me what Downings role is in the squad ?
It seems it could be part of the problem as I just don't see a clear laid out role for him .

Also looking at the above video I noticed Gareth Barry .. was he even playing :pac:

i've not been online in a few days, but firstly, just to say, another super performance on Sunday. we should've won, and that's happening too often, where we should be winning, but bad finishing and brilliant visiting goalkeeping is denying us.

it all continues to be very encouraging though.

but i wanted to reserve a special word for our general, Mr Lucas Leiva.

    warning: long post ahead...

i'm saying it right off the bat, that right now, I wouldn't swap Lucas for any other DM playing in the EPL.

i trust him implicitly in that role. he's learned it. he knows it. he loves it. he's strong. his anticipation is as good as anyone's. his passing has great variety. his game-reading is super. at this moment, he exhibits a bit of everything. there is of course room for improvement, but i could barely be happier with him presently. and that stance has only grown stronger since about 2 years ago.

but one quality he has that makes me trust him even more, and makes me believe he will not let the side down at any point in the future, is that he is battle-hardened to the core after what he has been through at the club. and to think some fans still don't want him, or will admit that they were wrong to not trust in Rafa's judgment (and Stevie's btw) on him....

...anyway, i say battle-hardened, because does anyone remember this?? it's Lucas' take on the most difficult part of his career...from mid-2009

thank you Rafa and Stevie in particular for your belief in the lad through the difficult early years.

i remember defending Lucas around the 2008/2009 time. I was at Anfield, and did the tour as those i went with hadn't been before, and due to my defence of Lucas, and my belief that he would at least be a very good squad player for us, they encouraged me to sit beside my "homeboy" Lucas' shirt in the Anfield dressing room.

i still have the photo, and proud of it too :)

the man had to deal with the shadow of Alonso, a section of supporters deriding him, and then has had the courage and conviction in himself to work his balls off, learn the position, turn the vast majority of the boo-boys around, and become the anchor of the Liverpool midfield - the guy is now our pivot, our shield, our tempo setter, our general.

the performance on Sunday was the latest in an ever growing list of awesome performances, particularly against midfields he is "supposed" to be inferior to. he has helped dominate Chelsea twice last year, and more than match this. he's helped give us the edge in many of our games against United, and many other games over the last couple of years too.

in fact, speaking of United, the first United game he really stood out in, our 2-0 game when Pepe straddled N'Gog after our winner, was the one where it all really turned around for him. from the man himself...

as i say, Sunday was merely the latest example of his growing stature. he won a ridiculous amount of challenges. he hit passes of varying length, strength and purpose. he dominated our tempo. he snuffed out Silva's space. he joined our attack at times with quality. he won aerial duels. he did just about everything a holding midfielder can be asked to do.

and i say this too...if Scotty Parker had put in that performance, the media would be fingering themselves over it. i'm a big fan, but the amount of times i've seen performances of grit from that man without half the technical prowess and calm that Lucas showed on Sunday, and he gets lauded as incredible, is laughable. i've no problem with Parker getting praise, as i say, i'm a fan of his work, and i'm only picking on him because he's the 'Chosen One' in the English media right now...

but this sort of shít happens while Lucas barely gets a mention anywhere. he got MOTM on Sunday....hardly a whisper of recognition. the most you'll get is the odd patronising "isn't it wonderful to see he's improving after his start at Anfield", or something to that effect. almost 5 years on.

it's time for everyone to forget about what he was. he was a young man, coming to a new country, having to learn a different culture, language...as well as way to play the game. he's learned his craft, and he's now excelling, and i don't use these words lightly.

we don't need the media's recognition to know how good he now is, but it's worth pointing out that he gets a fraction of the plaudits he deserves, and this is reflected in the amount of rival fans, and occasionally our own, who still refuse to see what he has become...because 'Lucas' is a name you cannot possibly associate with "quality", purely because of the start of his career in England

he's just about the first name on our teamsheet, only maybe after Pepe and Suarez.

the old Lucas is gone...long live our new general.

Very good post and one that I totally agree with save for one small point. You say that Lucas is our tempo setter. I disagree strongly with that as a true footballing tempo setter or metronone dictates the pace at which his teams plays and can up and down that tempo by himself in the manner that Alonso did for us.

It is no knock on Lucas to say this though, as he has plenty of other qualities to his game, ones that he is now showing on a weekly basis.

I do think that Rafa is the man that deserves all the credit for Lucas (that is all of the credit that is available after Lucas gets his share for his mental strength and determination) as he stuck with Lucas through thick and thin, and ignored what anyone else said about the player.

Cannot disagree with your comment of not being able to pick a better DM in the EPL than him. I sat down after first reading your post and tried to do just that. I can think of midfielders that are better in other specialist midfield roles than him, but not one in the Premiership that I would regard as being better than him in the specialist role that is the DM role. I have to look to the European leagues to find players that I would have over him, and even then it is taking pretty special players for me to want them over Lucas.

I heard that Phil Thompson started on him a few times during the radio broadcast of the game. He was musing aloud as to how the hell could Barry have ever been seen as any kind of replacement for Alonso.

I think that Downing should play when Carroll plays and Maxi should play when Suarez plays.

His most recent game for England suggests his lack of impact at Liverpool isn't simply due to form. I don't think we're playing a system that ideally suits him.

If Suarez was more of a traditional centre forward I think we'd have seen a lot more from Downing already. A lot of the time they seem to have the same ideas.

I'd say if/when Gerrard returns to regular football for us we'll get a lot more out of him. Adam and Henderson are rarely in the box when we're attacking. Having a few more people to aim at when Downing gets it out wide will be the difference I think.

Lucas has won more tackles than any other player in the league this year. And he must be well up the list for interceptions too.

Looking forward to the game tonight, hope I can get a stream. This is what I'd like to see:

    Reina
    Kelly-Carra-Coates-Aurelio
    --Henderson-Spearing
    Downing--Maxi--Bellamy
    Carroll

Not loving the Suarez bashing myself - wish it was down to jealousy over his excellent performances.

To be honest a lot of the bashing is down to his performances being so good...it's just being disguised as 'he goes down too easy waaahhh waaahh waaahh'.

If I could be ars*d it would be interesting to look back through the World Cup threads and see if any of those villifying him had an issue with his antics then or if they just became outraged over maybe the last 10/11 months for some reason....whatever it might be.

I'm not quite sure Kenny will make that many changes though.

13 years ago today, Steven Gerrard made his Liverpool debut.

what a servant he has been.

yes, the Chelsea debacle still irks some, but there has been no doubting his commitment to the club save those few weeks.

he's brought us kicking and screaming through league campaigns and Champions League journeys, and nobody deserves a Premier League medal more than him.

let's hope the unforeseen happens and he can play an integral part in bringing that particular Holy Grail to Anfield.

    we salute you Stevie.

    and the famous Olympiacos moment...

It is hard to believe that Lucas has turned out to be the player he is today when you consider all the abuse he got in the early stages of his Liverpool career. He has become so composed its unbelievable. I still wouldn't get carried away by saying he is the best holding midfielder in the league though, but he isn't far off it, and you have to take into consideration the wage that he is been paid compared to Yaya Toure.

I was impressed with Henderson as well on Sunday, looked very composed and rarely gave the ball away. We need to be patient and give him a chance. He has the potential to become a top player over the next few years. Downing looked far more threatening as well. The team is beginning to settle now, it was always going to take time after all the signings over the last few months.

We need to get some wingers in with genuine pace. It kills me to say it but Duracell Dirk just isn't good enough anymore. He runs all day but he is now in his 30's and his ability to run all day is beginning to wane. He gives the ball away too often and doesn't have the technical ability. Great servant though and still has his uses as a squad player just not as a first teamer.

Agger and Skirts have been brilliant lately as well.

    January window will be interesting.

Securing a top 4 place is still going to be very very difficult. The standard in the PL is higher than ever before.

”People just don’t know how good Lucas is. He is a fantastic player, he was captain of his club side at 19 and has already won full caps with Brazil.”

The level of abuse directed at Lucas was always absolutely mystifying.

Yup strangely even those who now have come round to lucas stilll say he was **** and useless at the start, which was never the case the guy was scapegoated like none other.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,299 ✭✭✭djPSB

In fairness he was a bit jittery a the start but it never warranted the abuse he got.

He was a young player who was expected to mirror performances put in by Alonso and Masch, which was unfair.

It was shameful how some fans treated him. A young kid straight from Brazil, thrust into the centre of a massive team, learning a new role in a new team in a new culture, and he was afforded no slack at all by some.

Dirk Kuyt was another who was constantly getting it in the neck back then. Time has proven them to be two of the most important and consistent players for us over the last 5 years.

    He really wasn't.

He obviously made mistakes etc, but he was never consistantly jittery etc.

He won us the away derby a few weeks after he arrived if people care to remember.

The Phil Neville handball game? Rarely have I laughed so much whilst at a game than at the sight of a Neville handball costing Everton dearly.

I actually thought Barry had a decent game, especially in the first half where I thought he was excellent and he was breaking up attacks and starting his own for Man City.

Obviously he's no Alonso, but he is definitely worthy of a title challenging team.

At the start people were looking at a player who had been more attack minded in a brazilian league, probably (like myself) checked out a few goals he had scored over there and thought we were getting a mix of gerrard & alonso. He's neither but is crucial to the team these days, tremendous tackler and awesome work rate. Occassionally he would give the ball away in the first few seasons while adjusting to the pace of the game, but not often enough to warrant the ridiculous abuse he got. His distribution has improved a lot.

I think any young midfield player coming into that side would have received abuse tbh. With hind-sight its clear we had 3 of the top midfielders in Europe in Alonso, Gerrard and Mascherano(Even though much of the footballing world claimed we were a two man team). Comparing Lucas to any of these at such a young age was never going to be fair.

This is gonna sound pompous but i always rated Lucas .

But im guilty of questioning Henderson and Carrolls long term value to the squad which worries me more.

Had to go into the Lucas thread to see what I said about him two years ago.:D

Was disgusted to see that I was not disagreeing with Mr Alan and having a "you are a spa" "no, You are a spa" discussion with him. Ah the good old days :pac:
