MBP to iPhone. Reverse hotspot?

    The personal hotspot feature on the iPhone is very handy for getting the Macbook online when only 3g is available. "What an age we live in" I thought, watching the Liverpool match in the car while I waited to collect the wife and kids from the train the other day.

    I'm wondering now if the opposite is possible. For i.e. in work where I can plug in the laptop to the network but never have a 3g signal for the phone and there is no open wifi. Can I use the MBP as a hotspot for the phone to get online?

    This is eimple enough to do, I think its under System Preferences > Sharing

    Then select Internet Sharing, and can create a Wifi Hotspot which an iPhone/iPad can easily connect to. I think its also possible over Bluetooth as well. Can't remember exactly the steps but think was straight forward anyway.

    Have done it a few times while travelling when dont have data coverage on my phone.

    Yeah, it's very straightforward:

    System Preferences > Sharing > internet Sharing

    Share your connection from Ethernet to computers using Airport/WiFi. Other Apple devices will then be able to see and share your Mac's connection. You can also go into Airport/Wi-Fi Options if you want to set a password for the network and/or share it with non-Apple devices.

    can this be done to share a wifi connection to a pc/mac that doesnt have a wifi dongle?

    Via Ethernet, yes. I have a WDTV that I share my MBP's wireless connection with.
