Ireland is being subdued by the drinks industry, the state and the church. as a way to keep the population under control and in line. Thats why we don't protest, thats why we drink more than any other country, thats why we have paedo's running wild in our local communities but they're untouchable

Firstly, we do protest (just this week 10,000 students took to the street)

Secondly we don't drink anymore than other European countries, that's a stereotype in fact binge drinking in the UK is much worse

The rest of the claim belongs in the conspiracy thread

No, really, that isn't the only reason people bash Ahern.
You might think it is, but it isn't.
Although he's far from the only culprit, (the Minister for Finance he appointed who then became Taoiseach, and the Minister for Finance then appointed by him, arguably played as big a role, if not bigger), he's still largely responsible for the utter morass this country now finds itself in.
That probably has something to do with it too.

You're forgetting high level bankers, the financial regulator at the time, the big builders etc etc But whatever if you don't like my opinion I won't lose sleep lol Just know it's all you Bertie haters who voted for Fine Gael & Labour & then bitch about them now when they do the inevitable & lie.

We do drink more than most European countries, it's just that the UK drink more than us still. I agree however that there is a stereotype created from years ago, when emigrants went abroad with sorrows to drown.

I'm not being arrogant but I don't think you're in tune with your surroundings,

for a start, read this http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2010/0422/breaking6.html

Thu 04 Apr 2010Irish binge drinking 'highest in EU'Ireland has the highest rate of binge drinkers in the EU, with nearly one in five reporting they drink five or more alcoholic beverages in a single sitting

Secondly, the students are dead right to protest, they were promised something that was a blatant ploy to get votes and nothing more than that.

However, we have sat idly by while 2 previous Governments (Ahern and Clowen) ran the country into the ground, Ahern was obviously a corrupt gangster but we sat there knowing this and let him carry on running the place.

Now, you tell me when the population rose during those times?

I'm not Ireland bashing here, I'm just looking for opinions on why we are a passive population? is it from years of opression? Is it the gloomy weather? Opinions please!

Yes because Bertie never lied

I've already expressed my disdain about the Bertie scapegoat and I certainly never voted for him and it's quite idiotic of you to assume that I have

Anyway I refuse to continue a conversation with someone who uses the word 'hater'. My boards policy

I generally prefer surveys that don't ask people what they do, but look at spending. I think it's more reliable.

However, you're right, we are passive. I think we are nationally terrified of rocking the boat. The status quo, regardless of how bad, is seen as safer than the unknown.

Anyone that thinks footballers are overpaid are idiots. It is people like this that buy tickets, merchandise and Sky Sports packages to fund all of this "overpayment."

    Rugby is shit.
    The Office is shit.
Two and a Half Men is shit.
How I Met Your Mother is also shit.
People that think music from decades ago is so much better than today's are wrong.

Wow, I've had five beers sitting here on my own over the last five hours.

    Is that binge drinking?

I'll probably get flamed for this, but I've never been one to back down.

I don't believe travellers should be provided with so many benefits.

Everyone struggles to make ends meet, but yet my taxes go to buying horses for some do-nothing who expects to have the state provide everything for him.

Not forgetting about the bankers, property developers,banking-regulator, etc.
But Ahern, as taoiseach, was ultimately responsible for ensuring that the regulator did his job, something he, obviously, failed spectactularly to do, and was also at the helm when further and further fuel was added to a property market raging out of control.
I didn't vote for either FG or Labour and am similarly critical of their current role in continuing with the ludicrous policies/direction dictated by the previous administration.

I also disagree with state subsidisation of the horse-racing industry.

I lived in a predominantly Islamic country for over 2 years. It was kind of crazy to see the control the Islamic Law has over it's people. Every Friday is prayer day, so everything shuts down. During Ramadan you cannot eat or drink during the daylight hours. Public affection is prohibited. Internet is monitored and prayer callings are blasted out of every mosque around you. I found it all fascinating, it didnt bother me, but it would if i stayed there any more than 2 years.

Then I came home. The angelus bonged out every day at 6, Sunday TV is taken up by Catholic Churches. The end of programming is done with a sign off by the church. Good Friday, xmas, Easter Sunday, everything shuts down.

I realised we're under control here, but we're so used to it that it seems normal. Well it's not, unless you're under some strict Law -so are we? It's clear that the church has been operating above the Law for many years now.

We are being subconciously subdued, i'm convinced of it. I'm not saying it's just the church, i just think there is an inherent nature in Irish Society that says there is no point in fighthing the status Quo. So I ask the question.....What Would Jesus do?:P

I have to agree to a point. They don't do themselves many favours. They let themselves into my back garden looking for scrap when i was doing a renovation. They would have nicked everything there.tools and all, if i didnt catch them. At the same time they;re claiming the dole. So they're earning a wage and on the dole. They would sell their mothers out to get their own way. I just know that they would screw you over in a second, they have a different moral standard. It's like a tribal thing with them. Yet at the same time if you cut off welfare payments then they will have absolutley no problem with upping the steaks when it comes to earning a wage by other illegitimate means.

    I'm sorry, maybe i'm racist, but i just don't trust a traveller!

I'm not struggling, I earn a lot less than the national average wage and I can safely say i've never had any money worries all my life(I don't live with mammy and daddy).
This isn't any great achievement seeing as we live in one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Do you find it hard going to makes ends meet?

How do you know what travellers expect?

People who voted for FF, particularly in the 2007 election, have a hand in the destruction of this country. The blame cant all be placed on FF, someone elected them.

    And we're off!

moral standard is in the lead, followed by maybe racist, looking more likeley now to be racist in the lead, followed by Travellers, the travellers have lasoo'd the racist and the moral standard, the travellers are gone, taking away with them the racist and the moral standard and finally mutual respect of opinions get's over the last hurdle to win the race,

it's all over, travellers ran away with morals and racists,

respect of opinions wins the race, such a close call, who could have thought the travellers would steal the show?:D

Releasing a film in 3D is ****e. It's a desperate attempt to recover revenue from film piracy by actually releasing an inferior quality product. The glasses make the screen too dark and it washes out the colours. Fuck that.

3D also doesn't work for us colour blind people
To girls who wear fake tan, who the hell told you men found that attractive? If I wanted a tanned woman I go after a tanned woman god damn it.

The Rolling Stones suck deal with it.

Being a Vegan or Vegetarian is just stupid. We have canine teeth for a reason & it's called EATING MEAT.

On those 3 we are in agreement, especially the last one, it's not natural.

Hmmmmm, thats a fair point. So what does that make me? a snob? although there is a distinct possibility of certain families in the community not mixing their genes enough, therefore they are of a particular genetic makeup that isnt consistent with somebody outside of their community, maybe i'm talkin sh!te, but there are the rumours of very close knit families.....so does that mean they are of a different race, if they have genetics not consistent with the average paddy?
