I think this is part of Joe trying really, really, really hard to avoid discussion of anything to do with the election or referendum.

Pick anyone in Ireland and you have a chance they will wander off in a direction of their own and talk about the election and then RTE is in trouble.

He's doing his best to discuss anything but the election. You can almost hear him going "don't mention the election, don't mention the election, don't mention the election, I think it was almost mentioned there but I think we got away with it, don't mention the election"

I think I'll ring in about something else and when I get on air ask Joe - "can I talk about the election" just to see what happens.

Sounds like he's very lucky to be in the position that he's in...I know that's cold comfort, but he could be in semi vegetable state.
