Hi, I've come across a clean cheap 2001 audi a3 petrol, Its due a timing belt change though, can anyone give me an idea of how much to get this done, and anyone got any recommendations for somewhere in the southside to do this? (ie somewhere that knows their VAGs well, but obviously not an Audi main stealer).

Also, I assume I will need to do the waterpump at the same time?

    Thanks

if you buy the timing belt kit for a skoda octavia 1.6 akl engine you will save a few bob instead of ordering audi parts.its the same engine. i saw on the skoda ireland site that they're offering timg belt kits at half price.

any half good indy can do the work for you, its a simple engine to work on.

You shouldn't have to pay any more than €250 all in including parts, labour, VAT for timing belt kit and water pump change on the old 1.6 8v engine.

I would really doubt you'd get a water pump and belt done for €250 all in!
Audi main dealers are doing it for a fixed price 489 or something at Hogans.

I wasn't guessing or speculating on the price. I do these kind of jobs every day and I also set the prices for doing them. €250 on the 1.6 is our price. Timing belt kit for them is only €75 or thereabouts, water pump approx €40. Add €15 for coolant and €120 for 2.25 hours labour and there you go.

These fixed price belt jobs that the main dealers do are semi-reasonable value for someone with an engine with a more complex timing setup like maybe a 2.0 TDI where the kit and pump alone will cost €200 + VAT but a 1.6 8v is as basic as they come so €489 is way OTT for one of those. The dealer needs the easy money on the simpler jobs to make up for the fact that they are not making as much on the more complex ones.

I guess they are pricing towards covering their asses in that case so!

More like pricing towards covering their massive overheads. There are certain situations where it may be necessary or desirable to go to a dealer for maintenance work but a timing belt job on a 10 year old A3 is not one of them :D

Thanks for all the help! I was expecting it to be about the 300-500 mark (500 or above making it not worth the hassle!), But if I can get it done for 250 thats good value!

no disrespect to george, i'm not slamming your comment, you must be a real saint to do t-belt kit and water pump for that price.

i also do mechanical, in this case supplying an SKF belt kit(idler/tensioner) and a GRAF water pump and labour on top i usually charge 325 to 350 for these jobs.

Not slamming you either MC, but I can't see the justification for charging that price on a 1.6 8v. Out of interest what is your breakdown of parts and labour based on charging €325 for that job?

In fairness we do charge €320 for either a 1.4/1.6 16v or a 1.8T and €350 for a 1.9TDI but the 1.6 8v is so basic it doesn't compare to the others in either cost of parts or labour time hence why it is cheaper.

In fairness ur only robbing yourself George charging that price and secondly ur no about charging so little when u have a belt slip r snap and u don't have the shillings to back it up for warranty.serioiusly like
