No, you don't have to buy SL. Apple also sell Lion on a USB thumb drive for €60.

However, you will have to do a clean install as Lion can only upgrade from Snow Leopard.

Thats it, I knew I would need snow leopard to upgrade.

So...buy thumb drive or upgrade to snow leopard and then lion

Doing a clean install is no hassle at all if you have a Time Machine backup. Once the install is finished, Migration Assistant will copy your apps and user account over so everything will be almost exactly as it was.

Sorry to hijack the thread but,

if I backup with timemachine (if i do) can i wipe the drive, partition it and move everything back onto it and it will transfer everything back over?

(specificaly dock layout, folder layouts, alias'd folders, scripts, bash/terminal settings etc)

As far as I know, it restores *everything* to exactly the way it was. I've used Time Machine to restore a non-bootable Mac a few times, and it's always been exactly the way it was before hand, same wallpaper, dock layout, application settings, etc.

    Hi,

I recently did this. I had a partition that I wanted to get rid of. It was no problem. Time machine backup saves everything but if you want to change partitions around it is no problem.
