Gary Neville makes out he picked that team because the players on it are fresh, massive gamble by SAF.

Just gonna assume we'll line up in the order listed. Jones on the left, Young behind Welbz.:pac:

I love it when we put out a team that looks ridiculous on paper, really helps take the nerves away.

its easy for you to say , you're starting,:pac:

I love it, I just love it.

Fergie throws a spanner into the works with that team selection. Masterstrokke or miscalculation?

Phil Jones making his first start in midfeild.

    Gerrard starting.

Jones VS Gerrard will be epic.

Nani, Rooney and Chico to come on for the last 20 mins and run riot.

    Anything could happen here.

    Bring it on.

Fletch, Park and Jones in the middle, Giggs and Young free behind Welbz. Serious lack of creativity in there. Park needs to have a big game.

Plenty of creativity with Giggs Young and Wellbeck.
Still a bizzare line up though. Fergie not looking to lose seems to be the priority.

not at all. That's 3 players, hopefully Park too against about a 7 man Liverpool defense when they don't have the ball.

Bizarre that Rooney isn't playing, however I'm not surprised at most of the others as internationals have heavily influenced his team selection.

Evans, Rio, Smalling, Giggs and Park all fresh. de Gea, Jones, Welbeck all very young so should be fresh anyway.

    Clear message from Fergie.

If you want to play the big games then retire from that pesky international football stuff

Thank god united fans can finally watch a bit of balance for this game evening out the liverpool bias that has existed for so long.

Neville is spot on. It's certainly an odd selection but how Many times has this sort of surprise worked out for united? Difference today is that if we go a goal down we have players to come off the bench who can get us back into the game!

I actually fancy united for some odd reason. I was less confident when I thought we were goin to play. 4-4-2

    No Rooney, Welbeck to start.

De Gea, Smalling, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra, Park, Fletcher, Giggs, Jones, Young, Welbeck

    DDG
    Smalling-Rio-Vidic-Evra
    Jones-Fletch-Giggs
    Park
    Young
    Welbz

    I'd imagine.

jaysus all out defend by UTD... i knew Fergie was ****tíng this fixture but that's taking the biscuit... might work out for him though... counter attack city....

Jones has played in central midfield at Anfield before & was awful. Hoping for more of the same.

Danny'll have a great game. I can feel it. Mon danny boy

I think fergie is kinda protecting rooney from the fans reception they would give him after the sending off for england.....makes sense, wouldnt want him to lose the head here today, i guess thats why he's not starting.

    Poor United side. 2-0 Liverpool.

Why do united not have any defenders on the bench

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,611 ✭✭✭jaykay74

Sir Alex explains his manutd starting XI vs Liverpool and says:

"We were far too open last season, bringing Phil Jones in to midfield gives us solidity."
"Wayne's had a bad week and under these circumstances he's best off starting on the bench."

The more I think about it, the more I believe this is a stroke of genius from Fergie. Lot of cockyness coming across from Liverpool fans now, hopefully that'll rub off on the team.

If a defender needs to be replaced then I guess Jones would go back from CM and Carrick/Anderson etc would come on.

Cause if we need a cb, we can use smalling or jones, and slot val at rb?

Looks like Fergie guessed (correctly) that Gerrard will play behind Suarez, and has stuck Jones in there to keep him quiet. Can't see it working, tbh. United team looks like it lacks pace, which is unusual, only Welbeck and Young are quick.

The battle will be in central midfield, and that's a battle Liverpool have won in the last couple of games against Utd at Anfield. Jones/Fletcher/Park are battlers, with Giggs and Young providing the creativity. Against Lucas, Adam, Kuyt, Gerrard and Downing - Liverpool's midfield still looks stronger to me.

    Should be a good game.
