Becoming a primary school teacher

    Hi All,
    I am currently teaching english in Korea and have decided that I would like to try being a teacher when I come home. What do I need to to?
    I have an Ordinary degree in Mechatronic engineering. But I dont have Higher Level Irish ( I know I will have to do this in L.C.) or a science subject from the leaving cert.
    Any advice would be greatly appriciated.

    To do the postgrad in primary teaching (2 years) you need Higher Irish (or equivalent) and an honours degree. You will have to pay fees.

    Otherwise you could do a B.Ed (4 years) as a mature student, as long as you are over 23. You'll still need honours Irish or equivalent though. If you have done a third level course before you will have to pay fees.

    Entry into both the postgrad and B.Ed (mature) will require interviews through Irish and English.

    There are very few jobs around currently and pay/conditions for new entrants are significantly worse than before. I wouldn't be in a rush home if you can stay where you are. It is also an expensive route to go down for you, as you will have to do the LC Irish before even applying for any course. Fees etc a couple of years without an income and then the loooong search for a job - it really is a long, tough and financially draining road, a rewarding job at the end though!
