    What are these megadrives worth?
Would be nice to have a sticky with average prices of all known consoles & rare games..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,798 ✭✭✭Jack burton

See it depends what they are worth and what people get for them.

For example, a fella I know whos a retro gamer poser, just paid 70 + shipping for a SNES with one game. Which is not what a snes is worth. But people still pay way over the odds for things

But for a MD1, which are less common then MD2's you'd be doing well if you got one for around 20-30 with a game or 2. Anything more is a bit too much imo. You can get into more details though for different models and whatnot all command different prices.

If your looking for one Dale, I'm just a PM away

tbh only around 20-30 quid , cheaper if you're lucky at a car boot sale.
I know RAGE in (dublin)town sell them for 40.

It's not that I'm looking for one; It's just I am always passing these particular models while in the UK, since I go over there every 3 weeks or so and they're never more than £10-15. I still think it would be cool to have some sort of price guideline/index for retro games & consoles, not for trading or anything, just for the sake of being informative

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,798 ✭✭✭Jack burton

oh yeah I'd agree, I have my own internal price guide for everything I get.

I have an issue of RG with a console price guide in it, dont think they do that anymore do they?

TBH consoles are worth sweet **** all. You should be paying 10-20 for a console in a car boot sale with loads of games, a little more if it's online or in a dedicated shop. If you are paying more than 50 euros unless it's something truly rare (even a Virtual Boy isn't rare, you can get them for 50 not including postage) then you are a total mug.

Was handed a Game Boy Pocket last week. Not in great condition but works fine. I already have the original Game Boy in black.

I dunno, I think consoles are worth what your willing to pay for them at the time without feeling out of pocket to much or ripped off(I'm looking at you "The RAGE").

I'm willing to pay over the odds sometimes for machines that are in particularly good condition or are something I just "have" to have. If I see a 3DO/CD32 for sale and its in perfect condition, nobody is going to beat me to it, it will be mine. But if I see a SNES/Megadrive/NES for sale I'm generally not willing to pay over the odds unless there is something special about it, it just doesn't have the same place in my heart etc.

Of course, it also depends on your financials as well and there are times when I've not been working (the life of an contract IT Consultant unfortunately) and I've not had as much to spend so I will look at the price a lot more than when I am working.

That's life in general I suppose, if you have the cash to spare then go for it, if not be more careful.

As my Mum says, "Cut your coat to suit your cloth".

Just my 2 cents on it.

    I agree 100% Steve

Just saving up every penny to buy that brand new mint Atari 7800

Reduced from €500 all the way down to €350

    What a bargain ;)

@SteveSI we share the same view it seems. I'm prepared to pay a little extra to have my console(s) fully boxed with documentation etc. The only one I haven't done that for so far is my PC Engine Duo R as it was pricey already unboxed but had all the work done on it to warrant it. I'll get a boxed one some day...

I completely agree with you on the financial front though. If I don't have it to spare, I don't spend it. Enjoy your hobby. :)

I'm a bargain whore through and through. Unless something is a one off or exceptionally rare, I never pay over the odds for anything.

The way I look at it is this - by and large, the stuff we're collecting is mass produced. Even the rarer items. Therefore if something is expensive, a cheaper one of the same quality will eventually come along. I can't say I'm in a rush for anything.

I'll give you an example. I've been trying to get a Raiden 2 pcb for probably a good 3 or so years. On a few occasions, I almost gave in and paid around the €120 mark. I didn't, a picked one up a couple of weeks ago for €60 delivered from the US.

Even things I've paid a lot of money for, in most I've at least managed to get for about 60-70% of their usual asking value. It's part of the hobby for me. I like to be able to look at something and know I got it for a good deal less than it's worth.

And that ladies and gentlemen is what we in the industry like to call a jammy bastard :pac:

You're dead right though o1s. With a bit of luck and patience you can always get things considerably cheaper.

Speaking of bargains, I spent €30 on a 21" Sony Trinitron CRT, lovely flat screen on it. Now I can play those Raiden PCB's in proper vert mode. Best 30 quid I've spent in a long time. Bargain! :pac:

Haha! There's an element of that too...but I like to put that down to good timing ;)

It's easy to fall victim to buying new games as they're all shiny and, well, new. But if you don't have an old game or console, then chances are you've already done without it for years...so you might as well continue to do without it until it comes up for a great price.

That tv was a steal. You really haven't played Raiden until you've played it on a vertical CRT! Had me considering rotating my own Trinitron when I got home on Sunday :D
