    Are instead of our.

I get that they can sound alike, but how could anyone think it looks right?

"anal" when people actually mean "obsessive"
("Anal retentive" is a condition specific to toilet training - afaik)

    That's not a spelling error, that's slang.

On that note though, it does bug me when people say "is totally OCD" when they mean "likes to be tidy".

    Are there/their/they're were/where, Lie/lay,

been and being - it really annoys me when people mix them up

People who write E20 or 20e

It's €20 FFS!! ctrl-alt-F4 is where the €€€ is! We've only been using the euro for 10 years

Super F4...? Eh, no. Totally no.

ALT GR plus 4. Different thing altogether.

Or you can use ALT plus 0128

    Oldschool FTW.

    Lose/Loose

That's the only one that bothers me, It's written everywhere, in books, magazines, on websites etc. Drives me mad

If someone spells it like that in a thread or wherever then I don't care, my own spelling and grammar isn't exactly perfect but how the hell does it manage to slip past the proof readers for magazines and books

I don't use this phrase very much but... Epic Fail. Saw this in Clondalkin Village.

People who say/write 'whilst' and think they are being more educated than people who say/write 'while'. They just sound silly, and undereducated. Likewise for people who say/write "an historic" (etc) instead of 'a historic' (etc) and think similarly.

''Arguement''. Not on my watch, son.

    Definately.

It's definitely annoying. It's not that big a deal on it's own, but people do it SO much.

I do that all the time. I always notice when i do it but im never sure which is correct. lol.

    'Rediculous'

I saw this so often i started to think i was the one misspelling it.

I seen, I done. (I know about 20% of you don't realise what the problem is!)

I've also seen "debt" spelt as "dept" a few times recently.

    Tru instead of through

I also realised recently that I have been spelling 'length' as lenght.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,333 ✭✭✭earlyevening

I just remembered. Thought is often used (wrongly) instead of taught.
I think most of the population don't understand the t/th thing.

My main bugbear is the substitution of the world 'have' with 'of' in sentences

If I had a euro for each time I've seen people not being able to tell the difference between their/they're/and there, I'd be packing my suitcases for a nice month-long holiday in a far flung destination (e.g. Siberia :D)

That reminds me. Tons of people say and write "heighth" instead of "height".

    (+strenght for strength)

That's another one I've been misspelling for years!

The company I work for still don't use the Euro symbol, for fear that it won't show up correctly... eh maybe if you're on Windows 95 but not anything modern! I use it myself regardless of the others.

Cant instead of can't, that's annoying.

The missus says chimley instead of chimney, not usually a problem, except the other week when it was in our daughters spelling test.

My wife helped her learn them, it was the only word she got wrong.

I'm surprised that this thread has gone four pages without someone pointing out the errors in the OP's signature. I thought that pointing out any errors made while pointing out the errors of others was mandatory. Highlighted here:
We have threads here every week about the hundreds of millions of euros worth of oil off the west coast, and lots of stats about how little tax we charge on it, yet we have not produced one single barrel of oil. Here is an interesting graph depicting our crued oil production for the past thirty years. Some people think we are sitting on a fortune but Ray Bourkes dirty deal is losing us billions every year yet nobody, Irish state or private company, has made a penny from Irish oil! Our proven gas resources are also very modest, see here
