Just spotted a thread that makes that common spelling error.

Apart from the classic 'your =/= you're' mistake, what other ones grind your gears?

I used to be anal about this sort of thing, but then I realised that it was a lot of energy wasted. And that the person could have dyslexia.

But if you want a laugh, check this.

i always tend to spot when people use 'alot' instead of 'a lot' because my english teacher pointed it out to me in an essay i wrote back in the day

its one thing being a grammer nazi in thread, its another starting a thread in AH about it

the standard "your" v's "you're" mistake.

Just say the sentence and use "you are" instead. If it makes sense then use "you're" else use "your". :D

    Lose/Loose

That's the only one that bothers me, It's written everywhere, in books, magazines, on websites etc. Drives me mad

If someone spells it like that in a thread or wherever then I don't care, my own spelling and grammar isn't exactly perfect but how the hell does it manage to slip past the proof readers for magazines and books

    "payed" is common on Boards

Not a spelling error but a lot of people on Boards say: "I seen....."
I'm surprised teachers don't knock that one out of people in primary school.

Wouldn't a spell checker help with that (in some cases)?

Google chrome is fantastic for spell checker if I spell something wrong the red line pops up like in Microsoft word.

"anal" when people actually mean "obsessive"
("Anal retentive" is a condition specific to toilet training - afaik)

Oddly enough, the word "orange" came out of a similar issue whereby the phrase "a norange" morphed into "an orange"

At least, according to Qi, anyway.

I don't mind the odd typo, but blatant misuse and misspelling is annoying alright.

People who write E20 or 20e

It's €20 FFS!! ctrl-alt-F4 is where the €€€ is! We've only been using the euro for 10 years

The treachers? A couple of primary teachers I know have terrrible grammar! They say "I done" and "I seen" all the time.
(It's a pity the teacher training colleges don't address the matter.)

    Definately.

It's definitely annoying. It's not that big a deal on it's own, but people do it SO much.
