Excuse my ignorance, but is this activity to do with the African (don't know technical names) plaque pushing up ? There was a 3.3 earthquake happening at a depth of only 2.2km just above the French Pyrennees as well, at nearly 7pm local time.

    To quote Erik Klemetti :
Most of the young volcanism (less than a few million years old) owes itself to a hotspot that rises underneath the archipelago, much as we find in Hawai`i, Iceland, Reunion Island and other oceanic islands. However, volcanism reaches back as far as 20 million years in the Canary Islands and may partially be the product of a propagation of the South Atlas fault zone (SAF) - but the true origin of the Canary Islands is hotly debated.

The current activity under the island of El Hierro seems to be from a ball of magma that may be trying to get to the surface.

Thanks, I guess in my very basic, ignorant mindset, it made sense that the plates moving would trigger magma eruptions in spots, but maybe that's totally unrelated then, and yet again maybe it is.

A 3.8 within the last hour. The strongest so far since this all started.

Mal can you figure out why the swarm location has changed recently. Most swarms prior to August were on the North side of the island but the bigger ones have been to the south-west of the island instead. Are we dealing with the magma moving across a vent or is there 2 large chambers?

Not really sure what is happening. It's interesting that trend has been for the earthquakes to be getting slightly deeper, instead of more shallow. I guess the magma is on the move down there, breaking up rock and looking for weaknesses but hasn't yet found an easy route upwards. So either things change and the earthquakes start to get more shallow or this will just settle back down again without an eruption at all.

At the moment, there hasn't been a squeak since that 3.8 happened about three hours ago.

    Edit: Deleted false media report.

In other news, there has been a 3.1 and a 3.6 within the past hour.

Edit : This link from another local news source seems to indicate that a meeting started between scientists and government officials at 4pm today and the last line in capital letters says "big information" will be given after the meeting ends.

    http://www.diarioelhierro.es/t26496/pag02.asp?BD=ESPECIAL%20CRISIS%20S%CDSMICA&id_registro=140109&Id=26496&BDi=INICIO&nt=p&Md=

Update : The "big information" is that an imminent eruption is not expected & some local media is getting strongly criticised for printing rumors and false information.

Things are more quiet so far today compared to the last few days. The last 3+ earthquake was six hours ago now. There has been 2+ earthquakes but not as much energy getting released today.

We are either entering a winding down phase down or this calmer period is just a build up of tension that will be released with a phase of stronger earthquakes again.

Just have to wait and see.

How has this been looking over the last day or so?

EDIT: Just checked myself, Not too bad

Total number of recorded earthquakes is now 9,073 .

It's calmed down over the past two days. Nothing like the intensity it was at a few days ago. Unless something changes then I think this phase of activity is probably ending now and any chance of an eruption in the near term will go on the backburner.

A new phase has kicked off this afternoon, so far the earthquakes arent quite as intense as a few days ago, but the rate is quite high.

It also looks like they are trending slightly more shallow but its too early to know if this will continue or not yet.

Here is the seismogram of the last hour :

This is 50km or so from La Palma.

Is there any indication that an eruption at El Hierro could affect the apparently unstable 1/6th of the island that's meant to collapse at a moment's notice??

No chance. The theory with La Palma is that an unknown repeated number of eruptions on La Palma would lead to water heating & cooling inside the rock, weakening it until part of the island would collapse. Its only a theory and it is disputed by other scientists, but even if it did happen it would probably take thousands maybe millions of years to happen.

However, El Hierro itself has suffered several times from parts of the island collapsing into the sea. The biggest and most obvious has left an area called El Golfo, you cant miss it, looks like a huge bite on the northern half of the island!

I dont know enough about what exactly triggered the previously landslides on El Hierro and the situation at the moment is still evolving so I dont really know what a potential eruption with potential large volcanic earthquakes might do.

Magma on the move in El Hierro, Canary Islands

    by Jón Frímann

"This is happening faster then I expected. But it seems that magma is now on the move upwards in El Hierro volcano in Canary Islands. This is evident by the earthquake patterns that are emerging from the volcano. Given the earthquake locations, most likely place for a eruption to take place is out on the ocean based on that. But sometimes magma can find different pathways up the surface without a lot of warning."

Hope you dont mind me popping this in here Maq, but I thought this was wild and some of you would enjoy reading about this.

Six Italian seismologists and one government official went on trial for manslaughter in Italy last week. The unusual trial stems from accusations that the seven failed to adequately communicate the potential for a major earthquake to the population around the central Italian town of L'Aquila, which was hit by a devastating magnitude 6.3 earthquake in the predawn hours of April 6, 2009.

That is just shocking I have to say, I suppose the meteorologists are next for not getting the weather right

    Bump.

The last few days has seen deeper and deeper quakes but since this morning they're getting shallower and more frequent

EDIT: The sheer amount of them in an hour is just crazy

Earthquakes have been slowly getting more shallow over the past few days but are still deeper than where they were in early Septemeber. Remains to be seen if they contine to get more shallow or if they will just plateau around the 10km mark again.

    G0.jpg?

    Meanwhile : (adjusted Google translation)
Renowned volcanologist Juan Carlos Carracedo, indicates that "magma is forming a mushroom head," so that "if there is no change, it will be completed without breaking the crust. " That is, he added, "it has all the earmarks of being stalled" without coming to the surface and cause a eruption.

    Earthquakes-19-July-to-06-October.-Most-recent-quakes-are-marked-red.jpg

October 7, 2011CANARY ISLANDSIntense swarms of tremors beneath one of the volcanic Canary Islands has placed residents of El Hierro on alert for a possible eruption. Spain’s Instituto Geografico Nacional (IGN) reported the 9,300 seismic movements on the island since July 17 have caused measurable changes in the terrain. El Hierro’s only eruption during recorded history was in 1793, when the Volcano de Lomo Negro vent rumbled for a month and produced lava flows. Seismologists say they don’t know if the rising ball of lava causing the latest rumblings will break through the surface, but they have issued a “yellow” alert as a precaution. IGN Director Maria Jose Blanco told reporters that any eruption would most likely have a “low explosive value.” Tremors about 50,000 years ago produced an enormous landslide that cascaded into the ocean, creating a large tsunami that probably reached the North American coast. –Earth Week

October 8, 2011CANARY ISLANDSAn intensified sustained earthquake swarm is now taking place at the Canary Islands and it appears the magma is now on the move again bubbling closer to the surface and incinerating more rock in the process. Over the last 24 hours, we’ve seen the depths of the tremors rising up to within 11 km from a depth average of about 14.5 to 15 km. The number of seismic volcanic tremors has also doubled at El Hierro since Wednesday. On Wednesday, October 5, there were 79 recorded seismic events. On Thursday, there were 160 and on Friday, October 7th, there were 177

10km depth was recorded a few times this morning, so it does seem its slowly making its way up again, the quakes are shifting eastwards in its pattern also

The upwards trend has slowly continued for the past few days. Interesting that after that big earthquake last night there has been a cluster of shallow quakes....

Local media says the 4.3 has caused landslides on the road between the towns of Tacorón and La Restinga, which is now blocked at some points, and the outer slopes of Los Roquille. No injuries reported.

The alert level remains the same at the moment, but I think that if we see more large earthquakes like this then there is a good chance we are entering the final phase before a potential eruption.

It appears El Hierro is ready to erupt at anytime now.

Wake up, Maqui - you're missing it... maybe...harmonic tremor... waiting on official confirmation.

    Live Seismometer

For about two hours about the seismic signals El Hierro have changed signal hinting it could be low frequency movements
    waiting for official confirmation.
