Spent a few week's down there a in 2007,nothing there but a big army base & port stanley, can't even get a pint on draught, all bottle's,sh#ithole.but the place is very british, there's alot of drilling for oil going on down there at the moment, potentially billions of barrels of the stuff, wouldn't be surprised if the argie's had another pop seeing as the uk is making huge cut's in thier defense budget

It's a bit much to ask the occupants to change their culture by now, would have to scrub em out and repopulate

with one fell swipe of the mouse.

Clearly they belong to Argentina, but the meddling Brits stole them like so many cases we can think of.

    Clearly? How so?

Do small islands automatically to a larger more populous neighbour?

(Awaits comeback about bloody Sunday, Dresden, Kenya, the Belgrano etc etc)

It is not a matter of opinion, they are a British Overseas Territory.

If the question had been "Should the Falklands be British or Argentine" then the answer would remain as British for me. They had been British for centuries before the state of Argentina was even established!

Why should Argentina have them? Because they are close? Maybe OP you would be of a different opinion if I suggested that the Island of Ireland should be British simply due to it being within close proximity to the larger island with a bigger population?

    No to Argentine Imperialism!!! :pac:

    very good point

The falklands has been british for as long as any living person alive on this planet can remember, they have a legal right to be there and have lost lifes defending it from foreign countries looking to extend territories. And if it were invaded again tomorrow you can bet money on it that it would become a very short occupation.

What does that matter??just because people nowadays werent around when they unjustly took control of that island does not mean they have a legitamate claim to it.

How do you know this???Times are very different from when they fought the Falklands war in the 1980's. Britains relationship with America is completely different now and Britain are heavily committed in other parts of the globe.

Are we talking 1970s dark skin and bad eyebrows Klingons, or full blown 1990s big, scaley foreheaded Klingons?

It was the 1690s ones with the paper masks because they hadn't discovered prosthetic make-up.

With respect to your post, thats just not going to happen.

The UK has nuke submarines for one thing and a much better navy too.
Also Argentina is in no economic position to seriously p1ss off a NATO and EU member. Practically nobody in Argentina would support that move.

The British people have too much influence worldwide and too much ego for a non-superpower to get one over on them. They'd go bonkers at the thought of the 'Argies' of all nations beating them.

Its all down to the oil, if theres enough of it there the islands will be staying British for some time as they have something to offer.

If not all Argentina has to do is sit back and point and laugh with all it has to offer while blockading the tiny population, cutting its sole monthly Chile/Arg flight* and influencing other south american countries do the same (which it is actively and presently working on).

It would be a country only in name in that case.
They'd soon see sense in some negotiations.

(*recently has been threatened by Arg's president.)

Silly question OP there are no 'Falkland islands', you might be getting confused with the Malvinas.

No. It started because Argentina invaded the Falklands.

Are you not getting confused with Las Malvinas, the Spanish name for the islands. In English it is The Falkland Islands.

THE Malvinas is a bit like saying The Isla de Irlanda.

Personally I believe the Falklands to be British as the people on the island want it that way.

    BUT
Legally the British claim is very very dubious and it is reported (privately) they are aware of that. Which is why it will never go to the UN.

Now that the British has authorised oil exploration in that territory that is putting the cat among the pigeons, and bringing up the dispute again'

Not the best of links but it is nice and abridged.

How am I confused? My post was in English? My first Language is English so the relevant context for me was used. Why would I use the expression 'Las'? I don't speak Spanish. You do realise that 'Las' translates to 'The' don't you? So whether I use 'Las Malvinas' or 'The Malvinas' is irrelevant because 'Las' and 'The' are the same thing.

In English, the name of the islands is The Faklands.

Tell ya what, I bet God is rightly annoyed, all these squabbling mere mortals taking all of his islands, some gratitude.

Expect bolts of lightning from the sky any day now.

If you speak English, why don't you recognise the English version of the name?
