Does it make much difference? The Argentines didnt arrive in South America because they were invited. When Argentina gives Argentina back to the Indians they can moan about imperialism.

Indians ?do they not live in India ?

As practically the whole populace are UK descendents and Anglophone, has to be British really. The war was all a manipulation by the Thatcher administration.

What sort of accent would they have down there, anyone know?

The Falkland Islands (pronounced Spanish: Islas Malvinas) are an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean, located about 250 nautical miles - 460 km from the coast of mainland South America. The archipelago consists of East Falkland, West Falkland and 776 lesser islands. The capital, Stanley, is on East Falkland. It is an internally self-governing British Overseas Territory.

On 2 April 1982, Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands and other British territories in the South Atlantic. The military junta which had ruled Argentina since 1976 sought to maintain power by diverting public attention from the nation's poor economic performance and exploiting the long-standing feelings of the Argentines towards the islands. The war ended in British victory!

Read about the ongoing dispute - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falkland_Islands_sovereignty_dispute

So in your opinion - British or argentine islands?

Take a boat trip down there and ask the islanders. They should know.

Well there it is..Keith's given his verdict..case closed:pac:

Don't be silly. The UN, NATO, the EU etc have given their verdict and identify them as a British Overseas Territory, yet to half the people who have voted that doesn't appear to matter. Even Keith won't be able to convince the masses on this one. I'm not quite sure whether it is as a result of their ignorance or their arrogance really.

I remember living in Argentina and this often came up. As far as I'm concerned the population of British so it is best to leave it in British hands other wise a whole box of shít get's opened up.

I can understand Argentina's claim but it was something that the government in the 20th century tried to encourage to drum up nationalism.

The funny thing is that Ireland and Peru were the only two countries to recognise Argentina's rights during the War. The Argentines always liked that, got me out of a corner or two.

If they thought you had been British they would most likely have surrendered before it got out of hand anyway :pac:

Seems a bit random for a wiki page for the Falklands.

The Chileans supported The British during the Falklands war. Pinochet was a great buddy of Thatcher.

The British Navy has retired their Harrier planes

And they are so short of aircraft carriers they use the French Charles de Gaulle for NATO exercises. It'll be another decade before they have new resources

They've never been so weak, could be a good time for another invasion ;)

Yes, but after all the **** they've done helping the US there'd be 3 American battlegroups on the way the next day :P

I don't think the Americans would be so keen to help out unless it was in their "interest". Which I doubt it would be.

While they may have a trade surplus the standard of living in Argentina has plummeted dramatically. Something close to 40% are living below the poverty line. It's a hard one to call. Widespread poverty versus IMF domination...

They were professional soldiers Keith, not volunteers, it was their job. I doubt many people, Argentine or British, would willingly die for the Falklands

Cold War politics made for extremely creepy bedfellows so you never know, the enemy of my enemy is my friend etc. However the Argentinian junta was far closer to the US than the Soviet Union from what I remember.

The US was never going to turn its back on its main ally in NATO, even if they didnt always see eye to eye, anyway the brits were caught off gaurd, no one knew where it was before it started, the US supplied the brits with the ammo and missles they needed/should have had/probably couldnt afford as their country was fooked at the time. However close the Argentines were to the US, Im sure that was to serve mutual best interests, they never had their support like the British had.

40,000,000 cant make use of the 12,000 sq km of islands cause 3000 say so.
many of whom live there part time and were born 10,000 km away.

    (awaits self determination argument)

The British colonised the Falklands. The Argentines missed their chance. The inhabitants of the islands have several times stated they wish to remain British subjects. I'm no fan of imperialism, but the British claim to the Falklands is much stronger.

Tell you what though you'd have to be totally naive to roll out the red carpet to the all encompassing concept of britain, which England has been hiding behind a lot lately.. like we did a few month back when pledging our allegiance to uk / us and their escapades. at least come on your and your own countries accord, dick'eds.. These are soft In the head times I tell thee

/and anyone that interbreeds with em is a sellout. you're just like my aunty

Not all that near to Spain either. Why should Argentina not be under Indian (South American type) control?

The Argentinians even had a chance of controlling the islands before the British took it over. They ballsed it up entirely, it ended up virtually a pirate den, and after the denizens picked on an American merchant vessel, the local US warship kicked everyone off back to Argentina. Then the British set up shop to fill the gap.
