Could somebody tell me if the average locker can take a motorbike helmet?

    Tks

What lockers are you talking about?

The large ones in the arts block will, but the arts block isn't 24hour like the Hamilton is.
You will also need to be in pretty early to get a large locker!

There's a cloakroom in the Hamilton. Bring a cloth bag to throw your helmet in and hand it in there, they stay open for the working day but you wont be able to leave it in there late, shouldn't be a problem though unless you're going out drinking and don't want to bring your bike home.

I saw a thing in a recent SU email saying something about cloakrooms being free now, but I've used the Hamilton one for 2 years with no mention of charges before. Either way, it's free to leave stuff in there for the day.

Don't they charge you for leaving stuff overnight? Also there are lockers in the Lloyd building that may be bigger than those in the Hamilton concourse.

I said they're open for the working day but you can't leave it in late, ie. if the OP wants to store the helmet while going to classes 9-5 it's fine, but if overnight storage is needed for a night out or whatever, it won't be suitable.

Well I said if you leave something there and simply don't collect it, they have to do something with it. And it was my understanding that you would be fined the next day for that.

Probably a Newbie question- how do we get these lockers, are they a sort of leave the thing there take the key or do we get a special one for ourselves?

Queue up outside the arts block (early!) on the first day of term (Monday 26th), tell the man on the security desk where you want your locker, get a form, fill it out and give it to the guy in the office along with €20 deposit + €20 rent for one year.

Yep! Aim to get one in the Hamilton, it's 24 hour access and the lockers are at the foot of the staircase to the library. There's also Panoz/east end, which is the same building, but a bit out of the way. Lloyd building is nearby but the lockers are smaller and I'm not sure if it's 24 hour.

These are probably such stupid questions but I need to ask them! :P
Will the lockers hold a gym bag?.. And what times are they open?

The larger ones will hold a gym bag easily enough. The lockers are open/accessible for as long as the building they're in is open.

In regards to the cloakrooms, would they keep a suitcase on a fri for a few hours so I wouldn't have to trek back to halls, plan on going home once a month so it'd be a big enough case. Do a lot of people do this or would I look silly rolling round a massive wheelie on a Friday morning?!

I'll make an effort to get in early, but what would be the latest time to secure a locker in Hamilton? I'll more than likely be in at 8am-8:30am if I have a 9am lecture, but just wondering...

I've seen plenty of people put big cases in the cloak room, no one will pass any remarks.

Which of the lockers are the largest in/near the Hamilton?

I haven't gotten a locker in JF or SF and both years it was fine. I don't plan on getting one this year either. The only real advantage of a locker is being able to leave stuff overnight, which I never needed to do. I think some people feel extra security in a locker though, if they're bringing in valuables like laptops.

Called into the campus superintendent today and was told that there will be lockers in the Biosciences Institute but not for a few weeks. He said best bet was to keep renting the one I have and then come to him in a few weeks when the lockers arrive and he'll arrange a swap.

Oooooh tempting. Now to decide if I want it to be convenient for lectures or the library....

they aren't available until Monday morning, nobody has one (except those who renewed from last year)

the security desk, everyone has to go there regardless of where they want a locker so be prepared for potential queues

some people can turn up at 10am and get one, but a lot of people camp out at 7:30am for a specific location.... from what I've heard you should be able to get one if you turn up before 10am as the Arts Block has a large number of lockers compared to the smaller areas down East End. Even if you don't get one, some people apply but never come back so you might get one later in term
