Plan for me now is more of the same, tag along behind Krustys group in the marathon for as long as possible.

Plan is to go with the 3:15 pacers, first marathon so it's all a bit of an unknown.

you will do a good bit better than 3.15 goin by how strong you were sat , ya the thought crossed my mind but logistically it wouldnt be possible with work , kids ..... , i struggled to get the training in for the half at times , also i havent done a run longer than 12.5miles , was doin bout 45miles max a week for the half , so the miles really arent in the legs , will prob plan for dub next year all things goin well and life permits

Just gonna give a quick report : Adidas Half Marathon Sat 17th Sep

Took me 18months to get to the start line of this race , had been my A target last year but injury befell me.
Anyway was up 5.40 sat morn , Shower to wake me up and porridge shovelled in reluctantly , the customary prerace sustenance. Brought a few mccambridge sandwiches as top up to eat on the dart in from maynooth which i forgot about.
Fast Foward , arrived in areoks house at eight thirty , i greatly appreciate that he lets me impose on his household at such an ungodly hour (for visitors ). Lots of water drank ( too much , nearly two litres ) and two figrolls. Git03 arrived bout nine , funny guy , very relaxed , nice to meet him again .
Before arriving at the start line i had decided to keep it simple , keep with the 90min pacers till bout 9/10miles and break away then(on the condition that i felt good ) , no messing with gels or anything , just bits of water at all stations .
The first few miles were hectic , was hard to get into a good steady pace because of the crowds but stuck close by KC who shouted at the crowds to make way basically
Miles clocked by steady , no worries on pace , pacers kept us updated and both KC and TRR did a great job encouraging and providing wind shields when there was a strong head wind.
I was surprised at how comfortable the pace was when it had been killing me in my 25*3 tempos a few weeks ago
Held off breakin at 9 miles cause there was a strong head wind and i figured there would be more effort than gain to break then . Hit for home bout 5km out , felt pretty good , patrick K from the pacers group joined me ,was good to have someone to pull you along for the final stretch , passed lots of struggling individuals and one guy actually stopped dead within 1km , encouraged him on but he was holding his chest trying to catch his breath and was having none of it.
Finished strong and didnt have a clue of the time till i passed the finishline
    Garimn : 88.33/chip 88.31
The truth be told i could have given a good bit more , i hadnt set a sub 90 time that i wanted to hit even though i had a fairly good idea that i would come in under the 90min . Ive done 10k races that have taken more out of me . I think i was careful cause i never did a race that long before and so many people had said it was a really tough distance .Also i hadnt run a race since early june so i wasnt really race fit .
Still pretty happy , twas a really enjoyable debut , have no targets at the moment which i will have to sort out fairly lively , maybe a few xcountry races and want to give pbs on the shorter races a rattle .
Thanks to pacers , PK , aerok and anyone else that offered encouragement along the way .

ill say , had a 5km race planned for sunday but i have so many other commitments i dont know if ill be able too , was trying to plan the races i can get in before xmas , ill be luck if i can fit 4 in between now and then , the training and the extra wk that goes along with it are no problem to do its gettin free time for races .
    hows the training going ?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 477 ✭✭brutes1

Slow week training not as good as last with working long hrs 60 plus this wk , but should hit 75 mile this week, its just about enough to keep the marathon in sight. blew up last year in it horrific last 4 miles in over 30 mins . target would be 2.40 so ya gotta be ready for it or you will explode on the road in my view. so will decide in a week or two if i will run or just go hell for leather at cross country and hollymount and aim for a spring mara .

life gets in the way eh has to be done though plus no money in running! if you can get training in you will be ready for anything just look at last week, 4 races is a good bit before xmas , better to focus on doing fewer ones faster, you cant do them all !

No running just pilates , thats 3 run free days in a row , gotta get back up on the horse soon !

    Tuesday

Session : Jumbled Speed : 37min with speed bursts of varied distance and pace : I think its called fartlek ?!

No rhyme or reason to this session at all ! , started out with absolutely no plan and ended up with little clue as to the what i had really done , all i know is that i did 4.5miles over hills and i was sweating after , so there ya go !

Race on sunday and hopefully a program will be starting soon which i need by the looks of thing :pac:

I find it really helps to put each week down on paper, or have some sort of plan, even if i'm not doing anything specific. Just spent the last hour doing up the next 2.5 months .

Very funny description of a session..!.. its a good way to run if you want a break from routine and very rewarding for aerobic fitness, changing gear is tough ..Reckon cross country could be a good idea for you, maybe nationals in sligo end november, and intermediates next year - medal shot..? !

will prob do the novice xc on 10th Dec in the curragh kildare , will be the next target

    Wednesday

40min easy : body feels worse now that ive cut down training , had planned to get up early and do some pilates and stretching but bed at 1.am nipped that in the bud , need to be more disciplined if im to ready the body for bigger things in 2012

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 477 ✭✭brutes1

yeh i reckon cross country is a major strength of yours, boldly go where otheres fear to tread in ten inches of mud....
The curragh is quick course, wide open and exposed, you could go off course and run for miles if you miss a turn , ran intercounties there in 08 i think. any idea what sligo racecourse is like?

well im not too sure if it is a strenght , to be fair the competition was fairly poor in the womens national intermediate in 2009 and i was on home turf. Thats good to hear the curragh is flat , not too sure bout sligo , think i might have ran it in the past , for some reason i think its flat too ?!
Have you many weeks hard training left ?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 477 ✭✭brutes1

everything becomes flat in the distant memory i reckon...:)..,had heard it was a mudheap sligo ...
32 days to go, so 4 weeks hard training basically and 4 days easy, no time for a taper i am literally cramming in the miles aiming for 4 weeks of 80plus or bust

Sligo is more like 2 inches of mud than 10 inches! Depends on which route they choose too, but there is one good hill. The course floods quickly but also drains fairly well. So I guess that's not much help - a typical cross country course.

are you gonna do some the xc races ? You in for Grange 10k on sunday ?
has been a very poors week training , didnt get out yesterday so will prob clock up a 4 day week , not too worry startin somethin concrete next week .

race report : Sunday 2nd October Grange 10k

plan : go out hard and hang on , i just wanted to go for it and see what the hell im up to these days . I was prepared to take the risk of a crash and burn episode but it wasnt a very important race so i was willing to put myself out there . I had planned to go out for 3.50min/km splits and try and come in under 38.30, a very aggressive target and not my normal strategy , failing that, pb . The course i heard was flat so i figured that i should be able to pb.
Arrived down at 12 .The usual race prep which consists of 15 milion pit stops , a half arsed warm up, some pathetic stretching and lots of laughing and monkeying around left me well prepared for the start ! Final bathroom stop had me bump into a local competitor who told me it was hilly from 2-5km , great ! Went out all guns blazing , just to realise 5sec in the gps was off on the forerunner so i had to run with effectively just a stop watch . In a more important race this would never happen as i always test the garmin before hand . Anyway i knew i was goin way to fast when Eilish Kelly past me 500m up the road . Went thru 1km in 3.30 , crazy stupid fast but the legs werent listening to the head , passed one lady just after 1km , then her and another one passed me again at bout 1.5km , the hills started round then , not massive , but drags and a good few long ones . I had ear marked one of the women as a potential threat , she looked strong but i was gonna not think about the effort and hang close . Hills are good for me so i passed the two ladies again bout 2km at an uncomfortable pace , 7.23 . I was wondering how the hell i was gonna manage this pace but i clung onto a group and stuck with them till bout 4km. At this stage a guy came up into the group and started to shift on , i felt i should go with him and did which i regreted almost immediately but i had to hang onto him or it would be game over . I just had to focus on keeping the legs turning and forget the burning sensation in my lungs and legs . The hills kept coming , he was edging ahead on the flats and i was catching him on the drags . At 5km up i was 19.25 up and i reassesed my target to break 39.30 cause i was just cracking them out at 4min/km pace with a huge effort . I didnt even know how this was gonna go , the wheels could come off at any stage .I thought the hills would finish on 5km but they kept going well into 6km . During the 6km he broke away . At 7km he had gone and i was on my own again , but things started to improve , the course flattened out with a slight down hill . I was worried bout one of the women behind me so i just focused on holding second and kept driving on as best i could. 7km to bout 8.5km was okay with a good section of downhill . Two men came up and passed me at 8.5km so i knew i needed to go with them to hold my place. We hit 9km in 35.11 . I stuck with them and at 500m to go we entered to do a 500m lap of the grange track to the finish . Simultaneously the two guys had i think decided they wanted to shake me off which i wouldnt have cared about till i heard a kids shout 'come on mum ' , so i knew third was close by . Poor kid sabotaging his mums race , i increased the pace a bit . I turn the second corner of the track , just behind the faster of the guys and looked over and saw the third lady. I took off to a sprint finish and passed the dude in front . We sprinted neck and neck but I just pipped him on the line , and stopped the watch at 38.53 , pb by 11sec , very surprised , dont know how the hell i got thru it but thats what i set out to do at the race this day , bring myself alot closer to the limits .
Very pleased with the effort if nothin else
    Second lady : €50 , no complaints
Met Dna -leri for the first time who put in a great performance , fair play !

In hindsight i think that i didnt push myself nearly enough at the Half marathon and i put it down to race fitness , i hadnt sharpened up enough for my main goal with previous races
