Is Mafi still regarded as a NIQ?? I thought he was now Irish qualified?

Mafi will never be Irish qualified IIRC.

That's a good question. Some of the Australian Super rugby teams websites are really lacking. The Irish teams ones give far far more info. The Munster squad at the moment seems to be full of outside backs so his signing makes sense. I mean if Barnes or Mafi goes down injured and Earls was around he would be the next line. With him gone it's down to Gleeson (I think) and Johnny Murphy.

I think Mafi has played sevens rugby for NZ so will never be eligible for Ireland.

    Rugby union career
He returned to rugby union, the game he grew up playing, from 2010 after signing a 2-year deal with the Queensland Reds to play in the Super 14.[3]

He signed for RaboDirect Pro12 side Munster in September 2011 on a short-term deal. Munster Cheif Executive Garrett Fitzgerald said that this signing would shock the rugby world and refuted criticism from Munster fans that he had failed to invest in elite players. "This boy will out-Lomu Lomu" he said, adding "he didn't cost much either and with the leftover cash in the coffers I can get a personalised number plate for my Audi, I am thinking of FITZGOD".

He's not a bad player. He had an excellent 2010 when I thought he was going to break in to the Wallabies squad, and he struggled a bit for form last year. He's not the lovechild of Nonu and Fourie but I've no doubt he'll cover 13 and wing if needed to a decent enough standard for us. There's no suggestion of Barnes or anyone else slipping down the pecking order.

Firstly, I don't recall us being promised a world class centre, but the reality is we're short bodies across the backline. Who is our next option after Barnes? Look at the string of players that are missing out tomorrow. Substitute Sherry and Hurley for Barnes and Mafi and we're in serious trouble. It's a short term deal, worse case scenario it offers us cover in an area we're weak. Best case, he replicates his 2010 form, adapts well to NH rugby, and we've a star on our hands.

Secondly, this doesn't rule out a world class player being brought in after the World Cup. Dougie joined us in January. There's no reason why a new signing could not do the same, and take a short break after the World Cup before joining us after Christmas, or whenever Chambers' contract is up.

The Munster squad announcement made is clear that one slot was being left open for a centre. That slot is now filled and to be honest Chambers does not strike me as being anything other than a "we better put someone into that slot after we said we would" signing. If a "free agent" was the best they could find in August then there won't be a hidden gem unearthed in January if/when Chambers gets sent back to Oz. We should have been recruiting back in May/June like all the serious HEC challengers but then again under McGahan we have been anything but a serious HEC challenger.

Ye should sign this young lad on the pitch here in the RWC opening ceremony; just saw him sidestep about 40 lads all in one go :D

Same day as Munster host Scarlets in MP though, I suppose the early one is doable but I'll certainly be giving the later one a miss.

Not sure you can play with two senior teams in the one season?

Interesting to see how Shannon have been doing so far this year, Keogh seems to have made a difference. Hard to know if any of their team will be able to make it to ML level though. Anyone know how Butler has been going at 7? Munster could badly do with him making it to ML level sooner rather than later.

Shannon are all right when they have their pro/academy players with them. Without them we woud probably have beaten them. They will do all right but will not win the league
None of the pack apart from butler will make it to pro 12 level, quinn mcdonagh, o dea and spring may in the future, though i doubt any will do it this season
Butler was good at 7, but the real test for him at 7 will be munster A games which he should br playing much more of this season) and when the ulster bank league starts as the back row he will face higher up the grade will be much better than our backrow on friday night

Spring's an interesting one, I've been told that he has the potential to either play for Munster or drop down to junior, really hope this season works out for him.

    Munster Squad Update
    12 September 2011, 2:08 pmBy The Editor
Mike Sherry, Denis Hurley and BJ Botha return to full training for Munster this week and could well feature in the RaboDirect PRO12 game against Scarlets at the weekend (Musgrave Park 7.45pm).
Tomas O'Leary (lower back) sees a specialist later this week when an indication of a return to training may be forthcoming.

Ian Nagle (shoulder) and Darragh Hurley (achilles) have both resumed training and are expected to be in contention for inclusion in the squad for the trip to Cardiff Friday week, but Peter Borlase (achilles) is looking at a five week rehab period.

Troy Smith undergoes surgery tomorrow to repair the damage to his cruciate and Felix Jones who saw a specialist last Friday is unlikely to be back before Christmas.

Sweet Jebus. You have to feel for the bloke. Two and a half years and 17 appearances. He'll be well on the road to being 25 by the time he's back it would seem. It really does beggar belief. He must see the other guys that he played U20 rugby with like Healy, Keatley, SOB, Fitz, Earls, Cronin and Cave and wonder what the hell happened to his career (along with David Pollock).

Tough on the lad alright. At least this injury isn't as bad (in terms of time out of the game) as the last one.

Last season he got back into form really quickly, here's hoping for a repeat.

On another note it's good to see Nagle will be back soon. He should be targeting a spot in the HEC 23 this season. Darragh Hurley also needs gametime to prove he can take Horan's place in the squad when Marcus retires.

Borlase is looking more and more like a disastrous signing. Won't be back till mid October.

I genuinely don't think it's just bad luck, there has to be something he's doing or how he's built that makes him more prone to injuries. It's a real disaster for him. It also leaves Munster fairly caught, Murphy is an ok fullback but can he be better than that?

Yeah he seems to be turning into Barry Murphy mark II in terms of injuries. If he was to come back & break down again then he'd probably have to consider his options. Some people's bodies aren't able to take professional rugby.

Probably true, unfortunately. He signed a new contract earlier this year which was a serious show of support from Munster given his injury record. I assume it was a 2 year deal so the first half of that season is now gone. If he suffers another long term injury during the remainder of the contract Munster have to consider cutting their losses. There's no point putting money into a player that can't play for them as harsh as it may be.

Tbh, it might be no bad thing for Jones to leave Munster, much as I'd love him to stay. Very often injuries can clear up in a different regime, for whatever reason.

Course, that's a long way off, of more immediate concern for Munster is who plays fullback now?

Murphy, Earls, Hurley, Deasy, or Scanlon?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,433 ✭✭✭✭thomond2006

Murphy has looked decent at fullback, I reckon he'll play there with Dougie and Earls on the wing.

Deasy didn't show much when he got chances last season, he's a useful utility player (has played 10/12/15/wing) but I don't think he's HEC quality. When Jones came back from injury in March/April, Deasy barely got a look in.

I was hoping Scanlon would get gametime in the Pro12 but he hasn't even featured in the extended squads so no chance there.

The reason he hasn't featured, we've played two games, Deasy covers the FB and Outhalf position, Keatley is a10 and Murphy is getting a proper run at FB as our FB is out injured. How could McGahan have squeezed in Scanlon, give the guy a break.

I'm not having a go at McGahan but it would have been good if a new guy had been given a chance, say for the first game against Dragons. Murphy's done well so we'll be ok at 15.
