what have they done to the arts cafe, looks like centra with seats:eek:,and where all the staff gone, looks like only the manageress is still around...

well despite kylemore getting the contract I certainly don't see any difference in prices, if anything its more expensive.

The Conway sandwiches seem to be more expensive as well.

On the plus side one of the researchers in my building is buying a fancy coffee machine and it looks like a selected few may get to use it (obviously this is of no benefit to anyone here except me but I wished to share my delight).

Note to self, start stalking CramCycle.

I didn't really notice much of a change in the price of the Conway sandwiches, but then again I thought they were a bit expensive before. I'm just glad there's somewhere in the building I can grab food in a rush.

They were expensive before but for the same price you get a sandwich half the size now or a normal size one for 1.50 more (if my memory serves me correct) but I could be wrong.

Horrible sandwiches, coffee not great, staff very friendly but look slightly embarrassed by things.

Hang your head in shame Kylemore.

Nothing there but pre packed sandwiches and weak coffee, I wouldn't be too rushed to visit there, it's not fully set up yet.

Went in to Starbucks in Quinn today just for a quick look around, it was about 16.55 and they closed at 5 so didn't actually get to try anything. However I was extremely surprised to see part of the cleaning up at closing time involved throwing all the left over muffins, pastries etc into a black bag presumably to be put in the bin, what a waste! Maybe this is regular practice in all food establishments, I'm not sure but I was still so shocked to see so much food being put into the bin, surely they could find some other sort of use for them?

Happy to see that there is still some sort of juice bar where Zuma used to be will have to go back another day and try some of the food/drinks.

Not happy at all with the options so far... too expensive for ready-made sandwiches and what tastes like avonmore soup... nothing wrong with avonmore soup but I can get that from the supermarket.
Is there anywhere to get freshly made sandwiches like we had in cafe Fresca?

I'm also curious to know if Kylemore passed on the VAT reduction to customers. By the price of things I would not think so...

I ate at Kylemore down in Smurfit for the first time. It was ok, few choices but a bit pricey at 7.50 imo

Same, I thought it was kind of gross though. As a veggie basically the only sambo available to me was egg and cress (bleh). Way overpriced.

Devastated they don't have the lovely fancy soups anymore

The arts cafe was pretty crap in terms of food yesterday. I did however run into a few familiar faces from Fresca there.

Is the counter where they made sandwiches to order gone in the restaurant in Smurfit?

I dont recall that accurately but there was a little seperate area away from the main food but that may have been like a salad counter? Not much help to ya I know

cafe brava, the grind in the student center, and cafe sport in the sport center are the only remaining " not run by kylemore" food outlets on campus. fair play to them, and they should be supported!

This is going to be such a pain.

We can't choose where to eat (we have the restaurants overpriced mediocrity or Kylemore overpriced mediocrity) and its so bloody hard to find somewhere to eat your own lunch.

    Bit crap imo.

Sad to see insomnia go, I have to say I love their white chocolate mochas :D

Only discovered cafe fresca about 3 weeks before term ended, thought it was great. Very difficult to get a decent salad on campus :p

cafe sport in the sports center, self service salad bar euro3.90

Fair play to them for what, no a part of the deal? It's not like they're the great heroes standing up against the evil oppressor, they just weren't up for tender.

Also, the restaurant isn't run by Kylemore.

The one outlet that should've been put up for tender - the food is just dreadful there, and not cheap either.

Well I was actually trying to help you, not myself. If that counter is there (right beside where hot meals are given), then you can get any sandwich you want and freshly prepared in front of you. You were not reliant on pre-made sandwiches in my time in Smurfit.

Wow you go away for a couple of weeks and everything changes. Pity it's the wrong sort of changes I'd like to have seen. I'm sorry that Bobby Kerr and Michael Moyles lost their tenders. I really liked their places. They'll be sorely missed. I hope all the staff we taken on by Kylemore.

I've nothing against Kylemore except that I wish all those places hadn't gone to the one company. I would prefer to have more diversity. Already I see the prices have gone up. What a surprise. I used to saunter over to Insomnia for a coffee when I needed a break, now that it's Starbucks, I probably won't be doing it so often.

If this had happened a couple of years ago, I wouldn't have worried. I remember when Elements opened and it was amazing. So clean with happy staff. Anyone else remember "Mary" (not sure if this was her real name), she would roll her eyes if you asked for anything that she had to get from behind the counter (butter, jam etc...). She's now in the restaurant. Anyway, Elements took a serious nosedive over the years. I was gutted when they stopped giving garlic bread with lasagnes, even moreso when lasagne was taken off the menu.

I'll give the new places a chance but I shall probably get my tea/coffee from the garage by Montrose and head to the Mosque for lunch from now on.

Out of interest, how long does Kylemore have these tenders for? Is it an annual thing?

I've heard almost exclusively very poor feedback on coffee quality from the Starbucks in Conway. Similar with the food, though not to the same extent.

Were you there when it opened? In other words the time when the poster referred to it being really nice. Which it was when it first opened.

I was there when it first opened, it was decent but well overpriced, then it slowly became decent with smaller portions and then progressed onto overpriced rubbish.

Then Apache moved in and it became reasonably priced muck.

Not sure what its like now, I liked the staff, seemed like nice people, just not the actual goods they provided.

It was still the only place on campus I'd consider getting a hot meal.

Were you there for the good old days of yellow rice and Jambons in the science canteen. Where you could bring your own food etc. And fill out assignments before they had to be handed in for most of the morning.

Loved the tea in there, stewing for hours, thick as treacle :D

I had lunch there a few times before Elements opened. Same type of shíte you'd get in the restaurant.

I brought my own lunch to Elements plenty of times btw.
