Basically this describes what goes on in clubs and raves pretty well.

    This is hilarious.
Note to thysol: don't believe a word.

lol. But how is an average club? Do you get beaten up if you are a shy noob like me?
    This is hilarious.

Seriously, I was never in a club before, so what do you do in a club besides dance?

Drink. Attempt to talk to people, but realise the music's too loud. Wish you could find your friends / wish you had friends. Bitch about how high the admission price was. Feel lonely and pathetic. Approach a guy/girl (delete whichever) then turn away at the last moment due to shyness/awkwardness. Eventually figure out that clubs are horrible, and that venues where you can enjoy yourself with your friends and have conversations are far better.

    That help? :D

Well, I just wouldn't know what to do there. I am certainly not going to make a fool out of myself and dance lol. For talking the music is too loud and I am not going to drink. So what is the point for me in going there?

There doesn't seem to be a good reason, then. As I was implying above, clubs aren't for everyone (certainly not me). You could go to a bar with friends and drink and chat there, go to a society event, hang out at a friend's place with a gang of people and swap stories of the week so far...

Clubs aren't compulsory, and there's plenty to do that doesn't involve going to them. :)

None whatsoever unless you're into watching people making fools of themselves. Find an event that you'll be comfortable attending and it will be much easier to meet people and have fun.

It would seem to be a shame to decide that you don't like clubs/clubbing without having even given it a fair go, though....

Era I wouldn't think too hard about it really and just go with the flow...this is a new experience for pretty much all of us here so you'll be in a good place :D......seriously though go to at least one club lol thats where the best fun is to be had drunk or sober!

Clubs are just places to go when the pub shuts :L, you're not going to worry about making a fool of yourself because you're probably going to be pretty drunk, also it's dark enough so not everyone can see you and it's loud enough so not everyone can hear you haha

thysol, I mentioned a few times that I'm a nightclub bouncer, so I'm quite biased when it comes to clubs, but if you don't drink I'd avoid them like the plague. I don't drink, and I've been to maybe 3 clubs (when not in work) and it was just shít. If you have a few mates going and they're not the kind to make fools of themselves it could be a good laugh. Unless you're going with a group of people you get on well with, I wouldn't be arsed with the clubs. The clubs and societies host things all the time. In the Judo club, we usually arrange to go to the Pav (our residential bar) or one of the local pubs after training to get to know the newbies. I'm sure a lot of the other societies do the same thing.

I said all that in more words than were necessary. Sorry about that.

The bullsh1t with the academy really pissed me off, hoping COC will have a better handle on things.

God I remember that! It was Aurthur's day wasn't it? From what I can remember Brandon Flowers was playing there for the event and they were trying to get people out while holding us in a queue. However the Guards came along and shut the place down.

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for better this year. My sources inform me there's no replacement venue for the Thurs of Freshers, which is Arthur's Day again. Dandelion already pulled out, tripod booked up, academy booked up. Club philth is homeless..

Good to hear that, I think I'll just not bother with them. I hope I can socialise in societies or in parties in Trinity Hall or something.

    @Emmerz + NSNO
I might actually try out a club one day but I doubt that I am going to like it.

Thysol, if you don't want to go to a club check out a silent disco if you get the opportunity. There might be one on in freshers week (usually is). If you're not into mainstream music it's definitely better than a club. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 927 ✭✭✭Maybe_Memories

Approach a guy/girl (delete whichever) then turn away at the last moment due to shyness/awkwardness.

This is best done when you're with a group of friends who are also up for it. Get many pieces of paper, write your number on them. Go up to random guy/girl (delete whichever) and say "Hey you dropped this". Then make a quick escape. :D

As pathetic as this sounds it's great for a laugh. Especially when the texts start coming in. :p

what types of music would you generally get at these

Well it probably would be mainstream... but just bring an ipod/mp3 player or whatever and just listen to that! :D

However I wrongly assumed this was what happened anyway, but it turns out you're given headphones and you listen to whatever the dj's playing via a wireless system. But I'd imagine no one would say anything if you bring an ipod...

What do you do in a silent disco, it sounds kind of boring, just drink?

I don't mind mainstream music at parties, I had actually thought of taking my speakers with me to Dublin in case we make a party in Trinity Hall.:p But then I thought you are hardly aloud to turn up the music loud enough for a party, I would probably get thrown out of college faster than I came in.:D

DUCSS (computer science society) usually go to a nearby pub for chats and such. We get food as well, sometimes free food even. So don't feel like you should drink or go to clubs if you don't want to. At least one of us has bought a pitcher of ribena at the longstone pub.

Basically it's like any normal club/disco except it's, well, silent. Everyone listens to seperate headphones, often people can even have different songs to you on. Quite hilarious to watch people randomly dancing, when no audible music can be heard by bystanders :P Like someone previously said, the DJ can wirelessly transmit the music to you, but there may be multiple DJs :D Definitely a must try!
Every one will obviously be different, so it really depends on which particular silent disco you attend!

And yeah, of course there would be drink :D

Thats the spirit (though the authenticity of the rave as such is questionable).

A passport isnt much different than a wallet, and I've never lost a wallet.

Valid points. When its cold, like during winter, how do you guys club? With your coats and all that..
    thysol wrote: »
What is a foam party? What is a rave? What is a sud? Sorry if these questions are really nooby.

What if like in my case you were never in a club before? I'd be really nervous going in there.

I was too my first time, but it shouldn't be especially for freshers since everyone is new to everyone else. (:

Haha, I enjoy people watching, its highly amusing when they're intoxicated. I dunno about the clubbing scenes in dublin but I assume drugs are rampant in clubs regardless whedre. If you don't go hunting for it, you'll be fine. Its not as bad as the movies.

Led Zeppelin wouldn't be my thing so I'll be throwing on a bit of Nine Inch Nails. :D

You can have it as loud as you want (within reason) until 11.30. After that you can't make much noise. But if someone asks you to turn down the music a bit, I strongly suggest you do it. and if security asks you to, then do it.

Pretty much all clubs have cloakrooms to leave your stuff in, generally €2 is how much it costs to leave in a coat or a bag. So you'll leave in your coat and hit the floor wearing a tshirt or shirt or whatever, like normal.

Sounds like you can't have club volume levels even at daytime. Right, then I'll only take my wee ****ty speakers and my headphones, I'll leave the big ones at home. Just thought the big ones might be handy for a party.:)

I heard that sometimes even when you order just a limo some guys pour a shot of alcohol into it, or even worse some kind of drug. I don't want that to happen to me. :D

By the way, why don't you answer my PM?

Words of wisdom, this. Everyone else will be wasted, they won't remember how badly you danced or that awful pick up line you used.

They usually target girls I think, you know, to rape and all that sexual nonsense. As for the alcohol, I see my friends do it to each other for a laugh but I only ever go out with close friends so.. I'm feeling a bit paranoid now lol.

    SORRY! I don't notice when I get a pm. ):

Are we allowed to blast the speakers in trinity hall? Well, not blast per se, just slightly louder than audible.

Just stick with a group of friendly people or people who've gone out for Freshers! :D (I assume you're a girl, yes? :o really really sorry if I'm wrong!) But don't worry about it, just be sensible :) Don't leave your drink down and then come back to it, even if you're going to the bathroom. Don't be paranoid! :)

As loud as you're not annoying the people in the floor above/below you. Keep in mind people will be trying to study. You might be surprised to hear it but about a month in and a lot of the partying will stop. It'll still be there just not as frequent.

Of course then you have the ássholes who try and turn Fresher's Week into a year long party.

Also the walls are very thin. You'll be able to hear people in the room next to you talking.

Also it's incredibly annoying when the people in your house go out but you don't and they come back at 4am wasted and start screaming and banging on your door when you're asleep.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34 M_ark

I know this might sound slightly irrelevant but all this pre-preparing just reminds me of people trying to predict what was coming up on the leaving, all the obscure worst case scenarios! I'm sure we'll be grand! And besides there'll be such a big group of people in the same boat in the clubs, all new to everything, that we'll be fine. We'll make fools of ourselves as we display our lack of social tact but I'm sure we'll be able to laugh about it later. Now can we please stop stressing so much?? It's going to be great guys!

Drugs are around in the sense that many people use them, but you probably won't even notice it. And nobody's going to pour a shot into your drink unless you request it! Christ if they did, then why would people pay extra for a drink with alcohol in it! In general, don't worry. Take every negative expectation you have and tone it down by several notches, and then you'll get a more accurate picture of reality.
