Did you not get an email?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 146 ✭✭teotihuacan

yeah, just dug up that e-mail there now....so apparently theres no rush on choosing the electives. Nice.

Now for someone to answer them Q's! :D

What time are you allowed to begin at?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 146 ✭✭teotihuacan

This is what the email says about it:

    Electives

You can begin your elective registration from 17:00 on Friday , 02 September and you will be able to do it at any point from then.
Timing is not important if you are only interested in general electives – you do not need to try to register to them this Friday. Why? Provisional registration to general electives runs up to Friday, 9 September 2011: it does not matter when you register for a general elective up to that point so you will have plenty of time.

    Right.

    Mine is 8am!

    What modules/subjects are you doing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 432 ✭✭Yuugib

Hey, there will be a Change of Mind window at the end of Semester 1, where you get a chance to change your electives. Keep in mind, that not all electives will be available, only those which still have spaces left after first registration or where people have opted out.

    http://www.ucd.ie/students/incoming.html

As says on the website, the Change of Mind dates for Semester 2 modules will be published on 31 October 2011.

    Have fun!

    hmm ok thanks.

I chose intro to programming 1 for my last 5 credits.

If I like it and want to study intro to programming 2 which starts in semester 2, can I opt-in then?
Because there's no way I'm signing up to a full year of what is a very hard option without having any idea what it's like.

I'm getting really frustrated with the entire UCD website.

When I go into module registration I can only press continue (at the bottom of the page).
On the right-hand side of the page (under Registration Status) it says that I have Core / Options completed and Labs/Tutorials completed. No mention of electives whatsoever!

Also I looked through this thread and used the direct link and I got through to the electives page, but I'm wondering why I just can't find this page normally!!

I'd say I'm just missing something very obvious, but I can't find any electives page on the sis web. Do they start at 5 today? (like teotihuacan said) or have they been open since 9 this morning? Any help would be appreciated!

(btw I'm doing commerce, if that makes any difference)

You need to check your e-mails and thoroughly read the one about electives. You were given a time that you can begin elective registration. Probably some time after today.

I'm a wee bit confused with this whole "YOU NEED TO REGISTER MORE DAMN CORE MODULES" thing..

Is it because I've selected Psychology as a third subject stream, they're barking at me since I'm not doing the core subjects from it?

Can anyone who has done Film Studies tell me what these 2 hour labs in the evening are about? Are they film screenings or something? They are usually in addition to a 1 hour lecture earlier in the week.

Is there any particular module listed for that Sad Professor?

Picked Perspective on Films II , level 1. Wanted to do the Perspective on Films I, but I'm getting a scheduling conflict with that like most things:mad:

Anyone know if it matters if you don't do Perspective on Films I?
Really wanted to do both, but I'll be happy if I get one

It's the level 2 modules I was looking at. But nearly every Film Studies module I've seen at has a 2 hour lab at some point. I'm just curious as to what it entails.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 223 ✭✭what.to.do

    It must be screenings..

The only film studies module that wasn't full and didn't clash, for me, was from 3 - 5:50 on a Friday.

    Firstly, I cursed the length.
Then, I cursed the time and day.
Lastly, I didn't choose the elective...

When electives show as provisional and don't add up in the little box in the right are you still good to go or do you need to also choose ones that aren't provisional to be sure?

I'm a bit confused myself! Anybody know what happens if you don't get an elective that is currently provisional? Are you automatically re-assigned to any elective or do you recheck what's available and choose again.
Do people usually get their provisional elective or not?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,701 ✭✭✭✭Sad Professor

If you don't get your provisional elective you have to choose again from what's left.

The Psychology module (perception one) which I was really looking forward to is on at the same time as one of my core modules :|

I am not a happy camper.

Exact same thing happening to me. The Exotics module was the one I wanted most of all and it clashes with two core module tutorials. Tried to switch the times and one is fine but the other clashes no matter which time I choose. Absolutely gutted :(

If you are only in first year, just try them again next year when hopefully you won't have a timetable clash.

I've signed up for Italian 1a (ITAL 10020) and Italian 1b (ITAL 10030). Has anyone else taken these before? What are they like?

I studied Italian for my L.C., and while the description for the elective didn't specifically say that prior knowledge of the language would count against you, I still feel like I'm chancing my arm! Any advice?

Thinking of Doing the Forensic Anthropology elective. Im not in Med, but would like to do a med module. Is this one any good?

I'm pretty sure if you did Italian or any language for the LC, you won't be allowed to take a Stage 1 module in that language.

I wanted to start learning Spanish but was wondering what modules to take as electives in UCD for it.

    For example there is
    Spanish General Purposes 1 (LANG10230)

    and

    Spanish Language I a (Beginners) (SPAN10020)

SPAN10020 seems more intensive and geared towards understanding literary works. I just want to be able to speak it abroad.

I'd do the LANG10230! Did SPAN10010 (Advanced) last year and it was unbelievably boring and barely passed it, even though i love Spanish and did very well in it in the LC

I'm almost certain that you're not allowed to take a beginners module by the ALC in a language you studied for the LC. I definitely wasn't when I was looking it up for French last year! Just be careful because you'll be thrown out of it because it's designed for those with no prior knowledge of the language. You could look at doing more advanced modules maybe.

    Hmmmm . . . .

But it doesn't expressly say that a prior knowledge of Italian will exclude you! Or am I picking it up wrong? Here:

I think I'll just chat to the professor about it! What else can I do?!
