So everyone we all know the big final is still to come on Sept 18th.
But at this stage I reckon its between The Gooch, Darren O Sullivan and the Brogan brothers and maybe even Declan O Sullivan could claim it.
All great players but who will win it?

Don't think Bernard Brogan will win it, Alan has a good shout if he has a good final. A number of Kerry players are in with a chance but my money would be on Colm cooper. There is little fear of him not playing well in the final. I can't see it going to anyone outside these 2 teams.

    Cooper for me

Declan O'Sullivan and the gooch are the best two footballers in the country imo, one of these two

    Depends on who wins.

Kerry win and Cooper gets it.

Dublin win and Alan Brogan gets it. (even though i don't think he's been Dublins best player)

It is Alan's to lose right now imo, his iffy performance yesterday (oh ok, his crappy shot selection mainly) not with standing. If Dublin win the All Ireland, he'll get it. Hands down. If Kerry, win but Alan has played a blinder, he may still get it, if Gooch has a quiet game. If Kerry win, and Gooch has a half ways decent game, then he'll probably get it. Pity really, as it will be only for 2 games.

Darren O'Sullivan is a classier operator than Declan O', honestly.

And I still can't get over anyone thinking Gooch is going to be the player of the year at this point - he's had one top drawer performance and unless he does the same in the final and drags Kerry over the line then he won't even be assured of an All-Star, never mind being FotY.

In all honesty no one stands out as head and shoulders above anyone else at the moment but I can't see a situation like last year where the FotY came from a losing semi-finalist, the eventual winner will have been on show on September 18th.

Yeah, but he is loved by the medai which will guarantee him at least an All-Star.

Earlier on in the year, Declan O'Sullivan looked like to be the fornt-runner for the award but has been quiet in the last 2 games. If Kerry win the final, and Darran O'Sullivan plays at 60 or 70%, then I think he will win FOTY.

If Dublin win, then Alan Brogan will win the award imo.

Darren O'Sullivan?..Think he is in with a shot if he has a good game and Kerry win.

Karl Lacey should be in with a shout, think he played the most games from all the realistic contenders. Would like him to win it, he's such an honest player and was integral to everything Donegal did throughout the year.

Cillian O' Connor for the YPOTY hands down. Farce if he doesn't get it. And I say this as a Galway man!

It's hard for me to get behind any Donegal defender to be in the FotY picture because whatever else can be said about their ultra-blanket defence, it relies on bodies more than individual skill. Lacey also limbed off on Sunday with an injury so that further hampers any chance he'd have had.

Colm Cooper has never won it before. I think he'll take it this year. Other contenders would be Bernard Brogan again, Karl Lacey, Darren O'Sullivan maybe one or two others.

Will be interesting to find out.

Bernard Brogan cos he's a filthy roide!

    (and he can play football)

I think Colm Cooper the Mayo game aside has had better years and not won FOTY so i think not this year , up until the quarter finals Declan o Sullivan was a shoe in but faded imo Darren O Sullivan will get it , has been good to brilliant in all his games with the occassional pure magic moment and a couple of class goals if he performs to that level in the final I think he wins it . there does,nt seem to be as many likely winners as other years with and again its only my opinion not too many outstanding displays , lots of solid efforts but outstanding no, I think Mayo and Donegal progressing so far has effected FOTY and All Star thinking as neither really has too many contenders , Mayo over achieved in 1 game and Donegal used that terrible system where footballing ability was,nt really paramount. So Darren O S for me :) Also for Alan Brogan supporters i think he shot himself in the foot a little with his display against Donegal , where his shot taking and decision making seemed to me to be slightly in the headless chicken mode , Bernard has a better shout.

Hard one to call this year.

Alan Brogan had a good year but had two quiet games in semi and final.
Bernard was good but not amazing.
Cluxton grabbed the headlines but it's as much due to the novelty factor as anything else.

Declan O Sullivan disappeared off the radar.
Darran O Sullivan had a great year and did well in the final.
Gooch caught the eye in the last two games and ended up top scorer in the championship.

    Darran for me.

    Cluxton would get my vote...

Not just for the free taking, but the fact he's been consistently performing well in goal both saving and distributing the ball to the blue jersey...

Darran OSullivan best outfield player this year...

i though alan brogan was very good today and he is my favourite for it....

    who else is there?

Scored two early points and faded out for most of the rest of the match.

He was not a game changer against either Donegal or Kerry and he didn't play like the "best footballer in Ireland"

I think Cluxton will get it. Other notable contenders are Alan Brogan and Darren O'sullivan. Cillian O'Connor (Mayo) would be my young player.

After scoring the 2 early points Alan Brogan was Dublins playmaker and created the goal. I think its between himself, Cluxton and Sheehan for MOTM.

As for footballer of the year, it has to be the Gooch. If he did not get it, it would be a scandal in the proportions of Brian O'Driscoll not getting world player of the year in 2009.

set up the goal, had 2 or 3 key interventions and also set up a few points.

Outside of Dublin and Kerry, Karl Lacey is a contender for me. I know Donegal were ugly to watch and it was more of a team effort but Lacey was outstanding in every game and was badly missed when he went off injured against Dublin.

Tough call. Just listing possible names from counties.

Dublin: Bernard Brogan, Alan Brogan, Cluxton
Kerry: Colm Gooch Cooper, Darren O'Sullivan, Declan O'Sullivan, Brendan Keely, Paul Galvin, Tomas O'Se, Marc O'Se unsure about Donaghy despite him having a a good game today
    Cork: Alan Quirke
    Kildare: John Doyle

Darran O Sullivans form this year has been suburb. He'd be my choice.

Darran o'sullivan should win player of the year without question.I thought he was the best player in the final too and didn't even get mentioned for man of the match :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,683 ✭✭✭plasmaguy

There was no real outstanding candidate.

Alan Brogan was consistent all year and had a phenomenal game today, settling the team with the first two scores, setting up the goal and almost scoring another.

I think he would be my player of the year.

Why? Got a handy score today but was directly responsible for 2 Dublin scores and was very lucky Brendan Kealy bailed him out with a terrific save when he gave the ball away in the first half. A fabulous player but no way is he player of the year.

On the player of the year, its a shame Paul Flynn had a quiet game today because himself, A Brogan and Ger Brennan (yes i said Ger Brennan) have been terrific for Dublin all season. Probably go for Alan Brogan because he was good in EVERY game, excellent in some.

Mine too, but he could get over-looked with all the hype/media talk about how its "the first All-Ireland for Dublin in 16 years". In that regard, the award is between Cluxton and Alan Brogan.

    Alan Brogan?
