Letter from possible new business owner

    Data Protection

    I work for a large company (Company A) who are currently in receivership. Company B have made a conditional offer to the Receiver to purchase the Company A.

    Today I recieved a letter at home from Company B. They do not own Company A. It appears that either Company A or the Receiver has passed on my personal details (along with the rest of the work force) to Company B.

    Is this a breach of the Data Protection Act given that Company B is not my employer?

    Not necessarily, the receiver could have been asked to send a letter originating from Company B to the employees so Company B could have sent a template letter to the receiver and asked that it be sent to all of the employees.

    The people in Company B were not necessarily given a list of the employees and their home addresses, I would be very surprised if a professional like a receiver did this.

    Hadn't considered that scenario.

    The postmark would lend itself to this as Company B is not Dublin based.
