very poor RAW, even ZR's brief appearance couldnt save it
probably didnt help that the crowd was dead all night (bar the kids giving the odd pop for Rey & Cena)

I see Punk being back at Summerslam either in a re-match with Cena (somehoe getting the belt back) or in a 3 way with the winner of tonight's match, Cena and Punk.

    .

I don't often get predictions right but I kinda called it happening, so I'm gonna milk it!

I haven't seen the show but I don't get the shock of CM Punk being back. With his popularity at an all time high and with Summerslam lacking a main event I felt WWE were always going to go with him and Cena.

Having just watched it, it does feel too soon. The moment would have felt bigger if they had done it further down the line but alot of the time it seems the WWE goes from month to month. It was great to hear Jim Ross's voice again.

Delighted Punk is back. There is no way having him off tv could ever be better than on tv.

I had praised wwe for the punk storyline but seeing how the crowning of a new champ went I think they are winging it now. I'm still enjoying though. I was genuinely surprised and delighted to see punk turn up, I hadn't a clue what was going on when the music hit.

I feel bad for rey, two world title reigns in a row over the same night they start.

The reaction online has been woeful. You swear people havent grasped the concept of Summer.

You've people who think WWE clearly panicked about the ratings with nothing to base this on as Punk wont stooge to the dirtsheets. Also despite Alberto jobbing last week to Kofi.

It seems pretty clear Punk is doing the Hardy and Jericho thing of staying on for Summerslam then leaving.

Ahhh, here's Zack Ryder, now they'll change their tune. (Ryder is useless by the way).

    you legend

    "i miss punk"

"they brought him back too soon"

    you'd wonder sometimes....

I know I should hate they brougth Punk back so quickly. I know I should hate that they're going to replay Cena/Punk at Summerslam without the reason the match was so special...

But I've got to admit I had a massive smile on my face when Punk walked out. The new music was brilliant cause it created suspense, and when Punk walked out, I was thrilled. He's red hot at the moment and they shouldn't waste that by keeping off tv for too long (even if his return would have made more impact if he waited).

Once again though, I find that this was a mediocre Raw with a brilliant ending which has me wanting to see what happens next...

far bigger pop when punk lifted the belt!

And the simple (wwe.com exclusive) "I'm Baaaaack" from Punk i really enjoyed! He is crazy over!

I actually enjoyed the majority of that raw - probably because i watch it in the morning in snippits on wwe.com when im not tired stayiong up till 4 :pac:

Is it possible that Punk is more over than Cena even?

I'm guessing the match at Summerslam will be Cena V Punk one WWE champ crowned maybe a heel turn by HHH costs Cena the match

I have preferred if Rey held that title until Summerslam

    Looks like he did..

Some serious amount of bitching in this thread last night, most of it gave me a good ol chuckle while reading this morning. :D
But the amount of bitching over bitching took it to a new level.

Anyway, first match was pretty good. Had it finish the show last week it could have nicely fit in with all the decent wrestling.
Miz has come on leaps and bounds in the last while.

When rey won it wasn't a massive deal to me as I could sense del rio or cena wouldn't be too far away. Like two pedophiles outside a catholic girls school, they were going to be waiting their chance.
When del rio didn't cash it in I had a feeling cena would challenge him like next week.
I'd say at summerlam will be either cena v rey or a triple threat between all 3.

While I think it's a really interesting storyline that they're going with, I'm hoping Rey and Cena's title reigns are declared void now that Punk is back with the proper title. Cena is now an 11-time champion or something isn't he? At this rate, given the fact I'd say he still has at least another 5 years in him, he'll beat Flair's record.

Don't see why they allowed Rey to win at all. Before the match, Cena should have came down, said he has a rematch clause but since Punk isn't around, make it a triple threat between Rey, Cena and Miz. That could have been a very good match, and would also have helped Miz being the heel in a match with two of the biggest faces.

I don't actually get this complaint.

Punk's problem was he felt his contract wasn't good enough. The above complaint can be dealt with in a single sentence. "HHH offered me the contract I wanted". All of Punk's problems and beliefs over this story have been overshadowed by the fact this was about his contract running out and him wanting a better one. Presumably if he's back, the storyline will go that when HHH took over, he offered Punk a better contract.

HA! Going over my Twitter feed, I just noticed Punk was tweeting during the show and saying he was in Hawaii...

I get that they had to get Punk back in time for Summerslam but I was quite enjoying his antics away from WWE and as said by Teamshadowclan in the Summerslam thread having Punk show up with the title and sit front row with Colt Cabana and Ace Steel at the ppv would have been great.

Well Ryder had a match on Raw  that could have been one of Punk's new contract conditions

Two title changes, JR's back, HHH in charge, and Punk's return; it was a very eventful raw! I actually thought they powered through far too much storyline for one night. Like is there too much to get done before SummerSlam!

Feel bad for Rey Rey for getting the "Dolph Ziggler" title run.

I guess since we're on the other side of it now, it took two weeks for Cena to regain the belt and Punk to come back to WWE.

lol, those ebayers better sell those t-shirts quick, i'm sure WWE will start re-printing them. Not a huge fan of Punk's new song; it's a total babyface song but it's just far less kick-ass than This Fire Burns.

Downstait now have 3 songs in WWE all at the same time. I do like this version of Ziggler's better :)

Cole was hilarious in HHH's outfit; Tripper did a good job entertaining me, great to see LI Iced Z on RAW :)

Someone pointed it out on Jimmy Korderas Right After Wrestling show that "Cult of Personality" was used for Stone Colds Hall of Fame package... pretty neat coincidence

But vince offered him loads, money, the jet, ice cream bars.
So what could trips offer to trump that?

Like tripper did get called the dofus son in law. If he gives in and gives punk whatever he wants than how will that make him any different than vince when he apologised?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 42,994 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lord TSC

But Punk was going to sign the contract when Vince apologised. The only thing that stopped him on that night was Cena came out and prevented it.

So they say once HHH was put in charge, he sat down with Punk and offered him a new contract. One with the jets, money, a garruntee to be used in main events. Maybe even the ability to make one match for Mania. Maybe even the ability to get contracts for Cabana and KoW. But most importantly, HHH promised a change from Vince's direction, a new era about to be born. And HHH gave Punk the chance to become the face of that new era.

The above complaint can be dealt with in a single sentence. "HHH offered me the contract I wanted".

If you recall the last thing he said on RAW before MITB was that he was tired (of WWE); that he was sick of John Cena (and everything he represents). Previous to that he said he hated that he didn't fit a certain mould and how he's not a kiss ass or a politician. I imagine he was making all of those ridiculous demands in the contract negotiation on RAW to force Vince to say no; so Vince would come off as the bad guy; he never intended to actually resign.

I think his credibility is a bit shot. Punk coming back after 2 weeks with his new theme song and his new video is him working within the system; the system that he vowed to hurt by leaving with the title. It would've been much more preferable if he came out without theme music OR video; stood at the ramp and clapped. Not come out to the ring and pose for the SummerSlam hype video.

I'm happy to see Punk back but I think they could've be done much better before starting the wheels for SummerSlam. His tirade last month is basically moot now. I guess HHH and muzzled Punk can explain it next week. He can't exactly rage against the machine if he signed back on for it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,600 ✭✭✭✭CMpunked

    That makes sense.
But should trips just be the character that gives in like that?
Did you see the comic con vid with his words after punk left the room.

I would say storyline wise punk hasn't signed a contract or anything like that yet, but I hope there is a reasonable explanation as to why.. Or how he got backstage and then onto the ramp.

EXACTLY what I was about to post. I think people are being waaaay to smarky here. As TSC and others have said, Punk was only leaving because Vince wouldn't meet his demands. HHH works out a deal and boom, Punk is back.

Overall I thought it was an enjoyable Raw, but the crowd were DIRE. Jesus Christ were they sitting on their hands? Also I marked out like crazy when Punk came out to Cult of Personality. Gabe better be looking for royality checks! :p

RAW was good last night. The opening match was really good, as was the Kofi and Del Rio match.

Wish Ziggler was used better than a match with Bourne.

The stuff with Truth and HHH was entertaining enough, though Morrisson bores me tears these days and I prefer Cole over JR. At least there's some face/heel banter between himself and King. JR and King just agree on everything nowadays.

Ryder on RAW. Hopefully he'll start to get used more often in real matches.

Divas stuff was a waste of time.

I managed to enjoy two Rey Mysterio matches in one night and considering I rarely enjoy one, that says a lot for himself and who he was working with.

The crowd were really good for the last match and people can diss Cena all they want, but as JR and King said, he puts bums on seats and people react to him.

When Punks ROH music hit I really hoped that it was just a tease for the internet fans and that he wouldn't be there, but when he did come out the reaction he got when he held his belt up after Cena was great.

One thing that irks me though is that Punks belt was engraved with his name. He was supposed to have walked out on WWE after MitB, so it should still say John Cena on it.

Will be interesting to see what happens next week.

First off, this was posted on Creative Recall...
First, I want to say congratulations to Dave Kapoor on becoming the new Head Writer of Raw. Sounds like Brian Gewirtz will still be overseeing the direction of both Raw and Smackdown but Dave deserves it and I hope he knocks it out the park. Him in charge actually kind of makes me want to go back, I always enjoyed writing Raw with Dave when Brian was absent. Let’s hope the change isn’t in title only.

Back to Punk, I'm not saying it was perfect. I would have done things differently and kept it simmering longer, but I was just responding to the one negative comment that I think is aimed in the wrong place.

I'd also point out that Punk is basically a face now, so there's alot of what was said pre-Summerslam that has to be retconned and ignored now. I know thats lazy booking but this is wrestling where you only worry about what has happened in the last two weeks <_<
But should trips just be the character that gives in like that?

If they want to build HHH up as the guy who gives the fans what they want (eg Ross & Ryder), then yeah. It's not that he "gave in" to demands. It's that he did what he had to to get the WWE fanbase what they wanted and thus did what was best for the company...

I don't buy that Punk was ever going to sign a new contract, no matter what Vince offered him. He just wanted to mess with Vince. So I don't think it's as easy as HHH saying he just offered him a new, even bigger contract.

I'd say Punk signed a new contract or even just returned because they were crowning a new champion, whereas Punk believes he is the REAL champion.

that second option is far better than something akin to Vince buying back RAW from Trump for double the price. (Just lazy booking!). I wish Punk didn't go straight back into the WWE machine so quickly. Could he not have spent a few weeks disrupting the show or something?
